Good Mountain Love

Sue Lyndon's portrayal of Ella, a young woman desperately fleeing an unwanted wedding drew me in immediately. Ella's plight is realistically portrayed, as is her reluctant attraction to the domineering bounty hunter Ed. Ella isn't sure she likes the way Ed dominates, and gently punishes her for rudeness, foul language and transgressions of his strict rules. But then, she isn't sure she doesn't like it either. As for Ed, Ella is a thorn in his side, and a burr on his heart.
Sue gives a believable glimpse into the loving world of a gently dominant man and his willing sub. You'll find yourself being pulled in and thinking that perhaps a loving spanking might not be bad at all.

I really enjoyed this story. It was the perfect steamy read to heat up a cool spring day.

Good story

Overall, I thought Mountain Devil was a good story. It's about a young woman who runs away the night before her wedding and literally runs into a bounty hunter. She begs him not to return her to her family yet in hopes that her wedding will be called off. His incentive is that her family will increase the reward for her safe return. They agree for her to stay with him for 7 days and that's the beginning of their relationship and it continues with lots of spanking. I had no problems with the spanking scenes, but I just didn't connect to the main characters of Ed and Ella. Ed seemed a bit cold at times and Ella came off as weak and always crying. Maybe I just needed more character development to feel more of an emotional connection throughout the story.

This tale takes place in the woods and, at times, over the knee.

Ella Emerson is about to marry a man she despises and just can't bring herself to go through with it. Hours before her arranged nuptials she prepares a small pack to go hiking in the woods for a few days assuming that once the out of town guests have left, the wedding will be called off for good. She does not expect to be mugged in the woods by an escaped convict and she definitely doesn't expect the bounty hunter in pursuit of the convict to capture her for the reward money her parents have offered.

Ed, the dutiful bounty hunter, agrees to bring Ella to his cabin and hold her there for 7 days in hopes that the wedding will be called off instead of postponed and that the reward offered by her worried parents will increase. But, a lot can happen in seven days.....

Ella isn't in the cabin for 24 hours before Ed finds a reason to turn her over his knee for a sound spanking. Their relationship soon escalates into a romance and later into a marriage, but one thing that remains true from the get go: Ed wears the pants and calls the shots.

"Mountain Devil" is a fantastic spanking novel. Ed is a clear dominant whose tone is consistent throughout the book. While Jerry Maguire had his gal at "Hello," Sue Lyndon had me at this exchange:

"Fine. Buckle up, Ella." His voice was sarcastic. But then with more seriousness, he added, "And you can call me sir."

My only criticism of the novel is that I was initially somewhat confused as to when the story took place. Ella's wedding to Mr. Wrong is described as an arranged marriage of sorts, which led me to believe that the book took place many, many years ago. This assumption proves false with the mention of Ella's cell phone and had me adjusting my perspective. While this certainly is not a big deal, I think a small dateline at the start of the first chapter stating the time and place would go a long way.

This was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to escape into a tale that takes place in the woods and, at times, over the knee.

a must read for any scholar of Jewish and/or Christian messianism

Four densely argued chapters argue for a coherent and pervasive messianic concept in the Old Testament and subsequent Jewish literature in a way that cuts across recent trends in the field. Horbury's first chapter ("Messianism and the Old Testament") lays out the case for a messianism that grows organically out of the Old Testament materials from earliest times. While not rigid, a coherent messianic myth probably existed from the early monarchy. Far from being an insignificant concept, the 'widespread currency of the unexplained technical term' for 'Messiah' together with fuller designations had spread across several languages by at least the second century BC, coherently referring to a 'rightful ruler of Israel ... the coming Davidic king'. This chapter complements analysis of the textual inventory with attention to 'landmarks in the study of the origins of messianism.' The argument is advanced that the supposed mutual incompatibility between God's unmediated rule and Messiah's rule which has much occupied scholars is a false dichotomy, since the texts show little concern to exclude one while focussing upon the other. The editing of the individual biblical books reflects a messianic preoccupation that encourages finding in the canon a 'coherent series of messianic prophecies'. This circumstance fomented both the reading of still further oracles in this light and greater specificity as the tradition advanced. Such a development of the tradition will have been influenced by forms familiar to Israel's cultural neighbours, as by the presence of 'messianic prototypes' within the Bible itself (Moses, David, et al.).

The second instalment of Horbury's argument ('The Prevalence of Messianism in the Second-Temple Period') maintains the focus on the period during which the biblical materials were edited and collected but allows its attention to move beyond the biblical literature. Horbury contests the view that messianism had all but died out the Roman period in Judea, arguing instead that messianic hope was 'more continuously vigorous and widespread' than the scholarly tradition represented by R.H. Charles and C.H. Dodd would allow. The royalist and Davidic messianism of Chronicles and other late biblical materials is recognised, as is messianic inclination in the Septuagint. Further, the 'relatively non-messianic Apocrypha' are placed alongside 'outspokenly messianic' sections of the LXX and the abundant messianism of Ecclesiasticus, I Maccabees, and others, the silence of the former group being presented as understandable in prose historical narrative, as is true also of the biblical tradition itself. Even when not overtly messianic however, 'hagiographical presentations' in historical narrative 'surround contemporary rulers with a messianic atmosphere', a resource that is then exploited in explicitly messianic manner by prayer and apocalypse. The Qumran materials come into play because messianic expectation appears across the spectrum of that sectarian library. Thus, the literatures of the Second Temple period develop the messianic myth widely and deeply, attesting to the vigorous prevalence of messianism in a period which is often described as silent on the very point.

Even if messianic hope was as widespread as Horbury seeks to demonstrate, it may still have been insufficiently coherent to exert strong influence. The burden of ch. 3 ('The Coherence of Messianism') is to prove that messianic expectation clustered discernibly around the concept of a specifically royal messiah. Indeed, messianism is not so much abstract and notional as it is a reflection upon the real-life kings and rulers whom Jews knew, expectation for a Davidic ruler emerging out of 'the tree-stump of scriptural texts'. Horbury argues for the coherence of messianism from five angles, two of these positive and the rest negative. First, monarchy is central and programmatic, the idea of it being applied to rulers who lived prior to David and to some who were patriarchs, judges, and priests rather than actual kings. Second, the exuberance of non-Jewish ruler-cult was not universally rejected by Jews and, notwithstanding ambiguity as to its appropriateness, may have made its own contribution to Jewish 'praise of their rulers and ... depictions of their messianic king.' Third, the notion of God as sole and exclusive saviour seems not to have been taken by the authors of Second Temple literature as exclusive of human or celestial mediators. Silence as to messianism in 'God alone' passages 'was fully compatible with recognition of the activity of a king or messiah'. Fourth, the literature displays an ability to integrate expressions of angelic and human activity rather than to play the two phenomena off against each other. Biblical literature and its interpreters 'co-ordinate' the two modes of expression in a way which allows for mutual compatibility. Finally, descriptions of angelic figures and their superhuman characteristics occur more frequently in the literature than is often allowed, a phenomenon which depends upon the background of God's lordship over angels and spirits. Indeed, 'the messiah seems often to be envisaged as an embodied spirit'. It is the Jewish idea of a pre-existing messiah which provides the raw material used by Christians in their depiction of the pre-existent Christ, a relationship that renders modern analyses which widely separate the two 'overdrawn'. Horbury's intention is to cite broad swaths of Second Temple literature in order to demonstrate, over against scholarly depictions of a 'chaotically diverse Judaism', that the coherence of the messianic concept was widely held by sects and movements which disagreed on much else.

The book's final chapter ('Messianic Origins of the Cult of Christ') brings the network of previous observations to bear upon the genesis of the Christ cult. A recognisable cult, visible acclamation and hymnody addressed to Christ, goes back to apostolic times. Although the forms of this cult came under non-Jewish influence, it is 'best explained as a development of Jewish messianism'. By relegating Greco-Roman influence to a supportive role, Horbury strongly modifies recent work on messianism by R.E. Brown and E.P. Sanders. At the same time, he is careful to define the generative potency of uniquely Christian experience as secondary to and dependent upon the precedent already established by Jewish messianism. The earliest Jewish Christians were as horrified at idolatry and chary about ruler-cult as their non-Christian compeers, but 'did not regard their Christ-cult as inconsistent with these attitudes.' Praise of Christ and the assignation to him of numerous titles was doubtless shaped and even encouraged by ruler cult and by uniquely Christian experience (such as, acc. to L. Hurtado, visions of the risen Christ); nevertheless this behaviour is best understood as generated in the first instance by the coherent picture of an expected messiah which characterises the biblical literature as well as the belief and practice of Second Temple Judaism.

Horbury's case argues that silences in the literature vis-�-vis messianism are not as loud and less empty than is supposed by the scholarly consensus. This powerful book obliges any student of Jewish and Christian messianism who happens upon such silences to ask whether they veil broad patterns of messianic expectation rather than speak decisively of its absence.

A Fine Complement to Hurtado

In Larry Hurtado's How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God?: Historical Questions about Earliest Devotion to Jesus, he takes issue with this book (Jewish Messianism and the Cult of Christ) by William Horbury. Yet, if you want to better understand Christian origins, you really need both books. This is because the authors' findings complement each other in very helpful ways.

Hurtado makes clear (not just in his aforementioned book, but also in Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity and in One God, One Lord: Early Christian Devotion and Ancient Jewish Monotheism) that devotion to Jesus as a godlike figure began in the period 30-50 C.E. with Jews in the Roman province of Judea. Horbury shows that Jesus was so venerated because he was fulfilling Jewish messianic expectation, and that the forms of devotion were those historically associated with that expectation and with the veneration shown royal leaders in the Greco-Roman world. Where Hurtado and Horbury disagree is on the degree of veneration, or worship, offered. While Hurtado takes pains to delineate devotional practices, neither author defines "worship" clearly enough for readers to be able to sort out exact differences between them. This inexactitude on this one aspect, however, is secondary, given the broadly complementary nature of their respective findings.

Horbury first shows how messianism - the belief in a coming Jewish messiah - is found in the Old Testament. He then narrows his focus of time on the Second Temple Period and broadens his focus on literature to include the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Targums, Qumran texts, rabbinical literature, and more - showing that expectation of this messiah was commonplace throughout the period. He then shows that, while messianism manifested itself in varied forms with expectations that differed and at times seemed to conflict, it was a concept common enough among Jews that if one of them made reference to "the messiah coming" no fellow Jew would ask "What's a messiah? or "What makes you think such a person might be coming?" Lastly, Horbury shows how the matrix of messianic expectation during the Second Temple Period in the Greco-Roman world provided context in which Jesus was understood - and responded to - in the weeks, days, and years after the first Easter by his disciples.

Horbury writes for the scholarly guild so he can be tedious and difficult for a layman to read. Nonetheless, his erudition brings to light for everyone the pulsating expectation for God's messiah in the time leading up to Jesus of Nazareth. Trying to read the New Testament apart from an understanding of that expectation can lead to many false conclusions. Horbury is an excellent resource for achieving that understanding.

Another source for understanding the messianic expectation, and one that is easier to read and understand, is Walter Kaiser - especially his Messiah in the Old Testament, The. Nevertheless, Horbury deserves commendation for his densely-packed contribution to a better understanding of Christian origins. I am very happy that I have read him as well as Kaiser and others. As Jesus Himself said, "Salvation is from the Jews" (John 4:22). No Jew ever spoke more truly than that One.

Horbury is obviously knowledgeable, both of the ancient materials and of contemporary scholarship. The book is a valuable contribution to the study of the issue. It seemed to me that he sees more nearness and coherence to the material than I do. He purposely opposes the current "standard" position of Neusner and Green's Judaisms and Their Messiahs and Charlesworth and Co.'s The Messiah. While I am not sure Horbury has the better of the argument, I am delighted he has stuck his oar in the water. We'll wait now for Joe Fitzmyer, and see what happens.

About the Author
Dr. Joseph Giarratano is a member of the faculty in the Computer Science Department at the University of Houston, Clear Lake. He has many years of research experience with NASA and is responsible for developing the C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS) user guides.

Now at PeopleSoft, Inc., Gary Riley was a NASA civil servant for over ten years. While at NASA, he was responsible for the design and development of the rule-based portion of CLIPS. Since leaving NASA he has continued to independently develop and maintain CLIPS.

This book gives a reasonable, detailed and seriuous account on expert system. A detailed presentation of the CLIPS expert-system language, along with the interpreter, is provided.

Viranch Mehta

Viranch Mehta is fresh out of college, with experience of one year at Directi Internet Solutions (www.directi.com) as a Developer in Operations. He has done his B.Tech. (ICT) from Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (www.daiict.ac.in), Gandhinagar (Gujarat). He has been a student Developer for Google Summer of Code (www.google-melange.com) in 2011 and 2012 with the KDE (www.kde.org) project in college, and a mentor in 2013.

The author has been a Linux and system administration enthusiast since his college days. He has built a lot of Homebrew automation programs using bash/python scripting as daily tasks in college. He started developing extensively with the KDE project, working primarily with the Plasma subproject, and later with the KDE Games subproject. He has also worked on Qt (qt-project.org) applications and writes small-scale software using Qt.

Apart from the work/hobby projects in college, the author has spent a large amount of time as a professional, building and deploying tools for monitoring and alert management. Directi, being an Internet solutions (such as domain name registration, Windows/Linux hosting, contextual advertising, and so on) provider, has a large-scale server and network infrastructure. He has also briefly contributed to Icinga with a few bug fixes.

Not Worth it for Price

This book is not at all worth it for the price. It's not bad, but there isn't anything in there you can't Google and with the advent of Icinga2 it really isn't up to date anymore. It doesn't even break 100 pages so don't expect any sort of advanced configuration. Not at all worth it if you have preexisting admin experience.

I'm really not sure who this book is for because if you're so new to the field that you can't Google the stuff that's in this book on your own then you probably aren't the one configuring network monitoring from scratch.

Basic, Straight forward, succint ....

The range of capability is concisely relayed in this book, I found the dialog and the descriptiveness of the book welcoming and reassuring. I have recently started to use Icinga as opposed to Nagios, despite the coding and displayed similarities, I found the interface refreshing and informative. This book does illustrate much of the depth and range of the software and while it may indicate the need for additional resources, it does present a very good place to commence bringing life to your network by assisting you in discovering all that lies beneath the surface. With a heterogeneous network a tool that is able to crawl inside each device and present you with a concise picture of what is going on, this book will help you in your endeavor. I really like this book.

A very useful book. Most of the pieces are in their original, complete form. A couple are abridged slightly. They are arranged in 3 sets that can be played one after the other. Great for a background setting, but also very enjoyable to play. Pieces are advanced intermediate to early advanced. Most are famliar, favorite classics. It is spiral bound which makes it easy to use. I recommend this book for teachers as well as for performance or personal enjoyment.

Perfect French Dictionary!

I purchased the Kindle version of this one, because I have a number of French books on my kindle and the dictionary that came with is is mono-lingual and therefore not of much use for me and my rather basic French skills. Most of the other dictionaries out there were criticized for not finding conjugated verbs, etc, and therefore deemed useless, so I decided to pre-order this one and wait.

And it was worth it. I tested it on a page of one of my French (fictional) books. It found all of the words, even complex conjugated forms of "etre". It gave me the correct infinitive and told me what form it was, and then gave me the translation. This is the first useful French dictionaly I have found out there, and it is going to make learning French through reading French books much more enjoyable for me!

Really great! I recommend this dictionary as the default dictionary for every person interested in reading French books on their kindle!

Good dictionary, but I got confused because reviews here apply to both versions

BEWARE: There are 2 one-way versions of this dictionary (1) Collins French-English and (2) Collins English-French. I assumed there was one version (a two-way dictionary) and bought the English-French by mistake, and then my Kindle wouldn't code the dictionary under French (to link it to French). I spent 45 minutes with Kindle Customer Service trying to get this fixed.

The other problem is that reviews are combined for both editions (16 reviews at the time I'm writing) - but they are not the same book! Reviewers talk about how this book helps them read French novels - but this is only true for the French-English version!

If you want to read books in French and quickly look up the English definition, buy the French-English edition.

Not nearly as good as Merriam-Webster's French-English

I bought this dictionary to compare it to the "Merriam-Webster's French-English Translation Dictionary, Kindle Edition (French Edition)", and I will be returning it. I have been reading kindle books in french on my kindle paper white to improve my french, and the M-W dictionary quickly became the obvious choice.

In looking through my existing vocabulary list, I quickly found words in the M-W dictionary that this Collins dictionary does not have. I also discovered that the definitions don't include the reflexive version of verbs (the "se" version)!

Examples:

Se charger de - no 'se' version in Collins
S'averer - not found in Collins at all!
s'evanouir - not found in Collins at all!

These are certainly not unusual or obscure words (get the M-W dict and look them up! :) ). Having fewer words was disappointing, but not calling out the reflexive definitions was a deal breaker. While I could probably figure it out from the provided definition, it would be far less straightforward. And in general, the M-W definitions are more to-the-point.

Very good book!

After reading this book, I have found it to be very good. Although this book may seem simplistic, it gets its point across. This book is not meant to be a dissertation on the spiritual growth of a Christian, but rather a quick help guide. Things don't have to be complex in order to make a point. Jesus even said his teachings could be understood by children before adults. If you have ever been in a theological library you would soon find out you are feeding your intellectual life and not your spiritual life. This book does not claim to be a future theological masterpiece to collect dust on a bookshelf somewhere, but rather, as a short and simple guide to help a person connect to God under the salvific blood of Christ. So if you want deep intellectual reading, find another book, but if you want a simple how-to guide to learn how to make your practical Christian life more spiritually pleasing, buy this book. By the way things look, you could pick up a used one for 35 cents or so, a small price to pay for easy Christian help.

For the Christian that is willing to see things for what they really are.

I love this book. This book shows different ways in which the enemy will attack the Christian. I used to think I was terrible because curse words and images of porn would pop into my head while praying. It is a direct attack from the enemy on a new Christians prayer life. I notice a lot of people are giving this book low ratings. Take that as a sign that this is the real deal. The enemy will only attack things that are a real threat to himself and the souls he is trying to devour. I would like to buy one for each member of my family. As for the people upset about the "attacks" on Catholicism, the bible says to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.-1 Thessalonians 5:21. Ask the Pope what happened to the 2nd commandment which is listed in Exodus 20:4, 20:23, 34:17; Leviticus 19:4, 26:1; Dueteronomy 4:23, 5:8; 1 Corinthians 10:7,10:14 and 1 John 5:21.

Every Christian Needs This Book!

The Next Step for Growing Christians is a small easy-to-read book written to encourage newly saved Christians to grow in their walk with Jesus Christ. The book consists of eight chapters, with each chapter presenting a different lesson for the Christian. I've heard of different ministries offering their own material to newly saved Christians; however, in my opinion, this is the book you should buy. The Next Step is a valuable asset for any Christian looking to grow in their relationship with the Lord. I personally believe every Christian should buy this book. My only regret is not buying it sooner.

DONNIEL S. SCHULMAN is both a Partner and the Americas Theater Leader for the Financial and Cost Management practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Mr. Schulman has 18 years of industry and consulting experience in areas of reinventing the office of the CFO, business process reengineering, and shared services implementation.

JOHN R. DUNLEAVY, CPA, is a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, specializing in the communications finance and accounting fields. He has extensive experience in consulting to the telecommunications, food processing, broadcasting, and education industries in the areas of international transfer pricing, management reporting, financial planning control, and product management and marketing information systems.

Great Introduction to Shared Service Center Projects

This is a great place to start if your are on the planning phases of a shared service centers. If you hire consultants for the intial phases your are probably going to get presentations from them that resemble the pages of this book. It is complete and detailed for this initial phases. But it lacks information regarding specifics around designing a SSC (specially on process splits between BU and SSCs.It also lacks information around KPI and how to manage a SSC.

There isn't much around on this subject and so it was good to find a book that was reasonably comprehensive. Apart from the advertising for a large CA firm and the message as to the necessity for consultants (shared services is after all a product and a money spinner for them)I thought it was useful.
