Modern PHP Ecosystem and Best Practices

I've developed PHP applications since version 4.0, back in the days when all methods were public. Now, most of those codes are considered legacy. Before reading this book, there were many gaps in my understanding of PHP 5, not only in its new features, but also in the new best practices. This book alone helped me to upgrade myself to PHP 5.6 confidently.

The author knows how to present stuff clearly. By giving real world examples, he wants to make sure you really get it. The book is easy to read and very well written. However, it is assumed the reader already knows how to code in PHP; it is not a book for beginners, or to learn PHP's basics.

Unlike online tutorials, the examples in this book are modern, for example, the author uses a component from Symfony framework to demonstrate the Namespace usage. Not only the author explains each new feature with clear examples, but he also covers best practices for each feature.

The author is well-known because of his work at www.phptherightway.com, you can get an idea on his opinions on this website. To conclude, I highly recommend this book.

Really Great Content

This book does a great job of explaining traits, interfaces and a number of other language features I was fuzzy on. It even goes through configuring a server with nginx, deploying your project and more admin stuff I needed to improve on. I was really excited to see that stuff covered so well. It's also cool to learn a bit about HHVM and Hack. Great book, highly recommended.

A Must Read for PHP Developers

Excellent ROI. I have been a web dev for almost 20 years and was a "hard-core" PHP guy for some of those years, then didn't touch PHP for over 8 years. PHP grew up while I was off in Python land! In my opinion, Josh Lockhart's Modern PHP is a must-read for any PHP programmer. Sure there are lots of things he could go into deeper, but this book was needed--an excellent overview of almost everything a PHP developer needs to know from installing and configuring PHP and web servers, code style, recommended directory structures, the newer supported object oriented concepts, testing, debugging, profiling, deployments, using Composer, and even a good overview of HHVM and Hack--enough to help you know if you want to dive in more at this time.

I will surely be referring to this book to lean on some of Josh's recommendations as I setup new projects.

A little additional Josh Lockhart plug--I learned about him when I chose to use his Slim PHP micro framework in my latest project. That project was rolled into production about 90 days ago to very happy customers. I am delighted with Slim. It does the very basic plumbing I'd rather not code and does it very well. Then it stays the heck out of my way so I can write my own PHP to do what I need to do.

a lot of great advice for early intervention, but misinformation too

Unfortunately, I read this book well after my son's own early intervention. But I read it anyway to give myself a boost. The brain is still "plastic" in childhood, so yes early intervention is best, but you have to keep at it as children continue to learn well past the magic age of 5.

I did most of what she did ages 2-6, yet my son has not recovered. He is now 9 years old..and of course, I'm still doing all she recommends and more.... but not with the same "miracle" results she got with Leo... What is frustrating is that I too (like every mother who gets the devastating autism diagnosis) love my son just as fiercely and I too did everytning possible for him, read every book, hired umpteen therapists (at great expense), and trained college kids (at far less expense). But rather than run ourselves into bankruptcy , we borrowed money against our house for his ABA. I would happily trade bankruptcy to achieve the results she did with Leo, but it wasn't an either/or. There are no guarantees, her book will give good advice and hope to mothers of the newly diagnosed, but she should NOT let them off the hook in pursuing diet and other biomedical interventions, although she devotes very little ink to those resources.

And yes, to the reviewer who mentioned siblings, siblings play SUCH an important role in helping to recruit playdates and engage the child with autism..but they too need special attention and my husband and I were careful to give her extra attention, including my husband coaching her sports teams. It is exhausting to try to give both your children what they need when you're all facing autism and the marriage suffers, but as she notes, who has the $$ or energy for marriage counseling? (What helped keep our marriage intact was 1)we truly could not afford divorce or even baby sitters for nights out, but of the two, the latter was cheaper so we sprung for it in order to have almost weekly peaceful dinners out together and, no matter how much we fought before our dates, and even sadly, sometimes during them, they were a net positive where we got to leave the stress of parenting our son for an hour or 2. We did not know how much those dates were helping until we lost our regular Sunday night babysitter and began fighting even more.) Maybe she did not offer marital advice --only empathy--because, according to a recent article in the Washington Post magazine, they did (like some 80 percent of families who face autism in a child) eventually decide to divorce.

But back to the review, what I found lacking in her book and why I prefer Jenny McCarthy's, and Lynn Hamilton's books which advocate the importance of both behavioral therapies AND biomedical interventions is that we did see improvement with GF/CF diet and vitamin supplements (which she said did not help Leo.) That was the missed opportunity...I almost wondered if she does work for pharmaceutical companies that she went out of her way to let vaccines off the hook. At least she interviewed Temple Grandlin and nutrionist Kelly Dorfman who both said how important it is to at least try a gluten/casien free diet....(I loved her quote by Dorfman "everyone hates the stupid diet," but it can really help! ...I was put off that the author said that she tried it but didn't really think it helped and that it would be _too much work_ for her and shw was relieved the tests came back "normal" so he didn't "need" it...but what tests? you still have to try it! Those allergy tests are inaccurate/unreliable. Esp. getting rid of dyes and junk food and pesticides is just plain common sense, the American typical diet of goo and glue (sugar and flour) is terrible for anyone w/ health issues. Unlike so many treatments we forgo because we can't afford them, the diet is affordable and leads to healthier eatting for the entire family, whereas things like secretin, oxygen, etc might not be affordable.
(I did not spend $8,000 on Tomatis, and felt guilty about it, so it was somewhat reassuring to hear that she didn't think it helped Leo.)

And autism is, sadly, "too much work" whatever we do, whether we see great success or smaller success...but what is really alarming is regression! A topic she completely ignored, probably because her son kept progressing. Also she included some weird stat that stated only 180 recorded cases of regressive autism have been identified! EVERY parent (and there are many of us) who blame vaccines as a huge contributing factor in our child's regression into autism(fever, lethargy, seizures, beginning of night terrors, loss of eyecontact, loss of cognitive understanding of books, videos, play skills) would questions those stats.

But there is so much evidence that vaccines play a role in autism, beginning from the HepB given day 1 of our son's birth , never mind that he wasn't at risk for that disease (and it does contain "trace" thirmerosal). Yet she made a point of dimishing the vast amount of evidence that in some babies vaccines do more harm than good...stating SHE did not "blame" his autism on mercury-containing vaccines because he did not regress after his MMR, she had already seen "signs"...why she lets previous vaccines off the hook, while saying she respects parents who believe they are to blame, I don't know. She should have at least mentioned that there is much evidence that vaccines DO play a role, rather than taking at face value "conclusions" from flawed studies (funded by pharmaceutical companies) that there is no evidence of a link. Just ONE convincing example of studies showing the opposite (see below) would help parents who suspect autism to at least DELAY further vaccines/damage to their child's immune system.

A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in April 2005, looked at the health outcomes of children who are fully vaccinated, who are partially vaccinated, and who are not vaccinated at all.

All the investigators asked the parents to do was to report atopic illness. Atopic illness means allergies, asthma, eczema, hay fever. The investigators were blinded, meaning they didn't know which category the participants belonged to.

When they assessed the data, they found that the largest number of reports by parents of children with atopic illness were in the kids who were fully vaccinated. The second highest reports were in the families who are partially vaccinated. And the lowest number of reports was in the children who were unvaccinated...

The investigators performed a statistical analysis to see if the data was based on chance or on real statistical differences, and found there were statistically significant differences between these groups. They couldn't understand how this was possible, because the generally accepted consensus is that vaccines are completely safe, and completely effective.

Based on this initial finding, we clearly need to do follow-up studies to ask the same question over and over again; repeat this kind of investigation with different populations across different parts of the country, to unearth the truth!

I can give this book one star because she does give good information about the different ABA therapies out there, but she doesn't give anymore than you can find on a quick search of Google. As a parent of a typical child and one with ASD I understand her personal story, the love, stress, denial, but honestly it is the most negative story I have ever heard. Thankfully for her family she was able to file bankruptcy and keep her big house and cars (those are her words) and never had to pay back tuition since the schools didn't chase her to court (again her words). I would strongly urge parents to choose any book besides this one, we are already fighting a hard battle, you don't need to read this condescending book.

About the Author

Steven De Haes, Ph.D., is Associate Professor Information Systems Management at the University of Antwerp & Antwerp Management School. He is actively engaged in teaching and applied research in the domains of Digital Strategies, IT Governance & Management, IT Strategy & Alignment, IT Value & Performance Management, IT Assurance & Audit and Information Risk &� Security.

He teaches at bachelor, master and executive level and acts as Academic Director for the Executive Master of IT Governance & Assurance, the Executive Master of Enterprise IT Architecture and the Master in Management. His research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceeding, and he co-authored and/or edited several books. He is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal on IT/Business Alignment and Governance�and acts as Academic Director of the IT Alignment and Governance (ITAG) Research Institute.

He recently held positions of Director of Research and Associate Dean Master Programs for the Antwerp Management School. He also acts as speaker and facilitator in academic and professional conferences and coaches organizations in their digital strategies, IT governance, alignment and assurance efforts. He is involved in the development of the international IT governance framework COBIT as researcher and co-author.

�Wim Van Grembergen, Ph.D., is professor at the Economics and Management Faculty of the University of Antwerp (UA), past-chair of the MIS department (UA), and executive professor at the Antwerp Management School (AMS).� He was previously a guest professor at the University of Leuven (KUL) and had teaching assignments at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, the Institute of Business Studies in Moscow, the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, Simon Fraser University in Canada, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. From 1989 to 1995 he served as Academic Director of the MBA Program of UFSIA (now UA). He is past academic director of the Executive Master of IT Governance & Assurance and the Executive Master of Enterprise IT Architecture (AMS). Over the last 14 years he conducted research in IT governance, IT audit, IT strategy, IT performance management and the IT Balanced Scorecard.

Dr. Van Grembergen presented at leading conferences such as the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), the Information Resources Management Association (IRMA) Conference and the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS). Since 2002 he is mini-track chair “IT governance and his mechanisms” at the HICSS-conference. He has many publications in leading academic journals and published books on IT governance and the IT balanced scorecard. He is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal on IT/Business Alignment and Governance. As founder of the IT Alignment and Governance (ITAG) Research Institute, he is involved in research for ISACA/ITGI on IT governance and supports the continuous development of COBIT. Finding a good book on "It governance" is hard

Finding a good book on "It governance" is hard. It's a loose term and there are a lot of partially misaligned definitions. So there isn't any "right" or "wrong" approaches in my opinion. You need to find *an* approach.

And I fancy the approach of the authors. First of all, it is based partially on practical examples from KLM and various Belgian enterprises. Second it blends the practical examples with a sound theoretical approach. Third, it references a lot of frameworks like ITIL, COBIT (obviously), Prince and also Ross and Weill (the authors of the "famous" book 'Enterprise Architecture As Strategy'). The book doesn't go into very much detail on these frameworks, but putting the content of the book in context of these frameworks is very helpful. The subtitle of the book, 'Achieving Alignment and Value, Featuring COBIT 5' is somewhat misleading though. The content on COBIT is brief.

I also like that the book is not very verbose. Only 160 pages.

Beware; even though the book has a lot of examples, it is fundamentally academic. If you don't like "heavy" books, go somewhere else.

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Depraved humor ahead!

"Franken Fran" tells the twisted story of Fran Madaraki, the only “daughter”of the mad Dr. Madaraki, who recently went missing. Thankfully, the good doc taught Fran almost everything he knew, so she has been carrying on in his stead by performing medical miracles for the highest bidder or whoever captures her sympathy. However, Fran’s sympathy should be regarded in the same light as a tiger’s attention, as it’s by no means always a good thing. Fran’s upbringing with the doctor has left her a little warped, and her idea of a happy ending and the ideas of her patients are often worlds apart.

The first thing to understand about "Franken Fran" is that it is at its core a collection of horror tales. I can see where the suggestive-looking cover or Fran’s whimsical, funny personality could mislead you, but don’t be fooled into thinking you’re purchasing light fare. This manga comes from a dark moral place where right and wrong have precious little bearing on the outcome. Yes, Fran has a tendency to always punish the guilty, but she has an equally strong record of perpetrating grotesque surgeries and atrocities on the innocent who have the misfortune to fall under her care. This book does contain a few genuinely happy endings, but even in those, there is usually some instance of stomach-churning collateral damage or a total mind-screw of a final twist.

Truly, the only “moral” to be found in "Franken Fran" is that you should never intentionally seek help from Fran… like, ever. I watch a lot of horror movies and am hard to shock, but after marathoning the 380 pages of depravity contained in this two-volume omnibus, I felt morally exhausted. This manga seriously messes with your head and leaves your conscience feeling violated. For that reason alone, setting aside the sick artwork, bizarre plot lines, and gobs of gratuitous gore, I have to warn you that this series is the definition of an acquired taste.

With all these warnings out of the way, I can now breathe a little and say that this manga is absolutely stunning and easily my favorite manga release this year. Why? Above all else, the quality of the writing. The sheer originality of some of these stories is amazing, especially when it comes to Fran’s radical medical solutions, and some of the final twists take a moment to wrap your head around. It also bases its half-baked ideas on real science; among other things, this volume finally helped me “get” stem cells.

Furthermore, Fran herself is quite an interesting character. Her actions are morally repugnant at times, but there’s almost always solid logic behind them, as well as a genuine desire to do the right thing. She truly wants to help people and puts everything she has into doing that. The problem is that her “unique” upbringing has warped her notion of what an acceptable outcome should look like – you just have to take her as she is and hope she grows in understanding as the series progresses. Seven Seas’ choice to make Fran slur or stretch her words sometimes was a cute touch that helped me “hear” the character a little better, and it went right along with her uncoordinated wobble when she isn’t focused.

The excellent writing is served and complimented by powerful, visceral artwork. We have character models with a variety of ages, backgrounds, and even nationalities, and the backgrounds are straight out of a Hammer horror film. The gold point is in Fran’s grotesque experiments, which literally have to be seen to be believed. I was also struck by the hulking lab techs who always seem to appear out of nowhere whenever Fran goes into “serious mode” when it comes to surgery – the brute force they convey lends a sense of desperate helplessness to her surprise procedures. The personality change that comes over Fran herself at these moments, transitioning from staggering half-loopiness to frightening intensity, was also perfect.

Besides the flat-out moral discomfort you get from Fran, really the only negative thing I have to say about the book at all is that the translation sometimes got muddy in the most unfortunate places. It always sounded natural (so, great localization), but the meaning was occasionally unclear, which became a real problem at certain twist endings. I had to re-read the ends to a few chapters and compare Seven Seas’ translation to some online fanslations to make sure I understood what was going on. There might have been some ambiguity in the Japanese as well, I guess, but I hope this will be less of a problem in future volumes.

So, that’s "Franken Fran", warts and all. Because this manga is so nasty and so much of a head trip, I’m going to take the unusual step of not fully recommending it outright despite personally loving it. If you’re unsure, you’ll really just need to read a few pages or take the plunge to purchase it to see what you think. What I can and will say, however, is that this is one of the best-produced, original, and daring manga I have read in a very long time. You can’t beat it for sheer nerve – which makes sense. Fran probably has a lot of sheer nerves lying around in her basement…

Horror manga with more than guts and blood.

Franken fran is easily one of my favorite manga, loaded with dark humor, body horror and social criticism, it's more than guts and blood. It takes some of the typical tropes commonly seen in media such as anime and manga and twists them into something creepy that can be terrifying but at the same time hialrious.

It's great to finally have this series localized, because I never thought that we'd be seeing Fran here in the US.

Grotesquely horrifying and highly amusing, I recommend it to anyone looking for a great black comedy manga or to people that can appreciate a twisted sense of humor.

I wasnt really pleased or displeased with this read... it seemed like it had a lot of generic information that could easily be found on one of many websites devoted to the topic. Then again many of us don't want to go digging through all of that and questioning the resources from where said information was found lol

For myself (an avid reader with many thoughts and beliefs on this topic) it was a 3 star read... for someone who is just getting into this type of book I think it would be a good choice. Its a one-stop spot for the basics and provides the reader to look further into everything, but to also accept.
I'm not sure if I'd recommend or not really... it just depends on the reader I guess

Third eye open

I wished before that I want to have a third eye and still want to have it now. I tried some of the tips of my friends to open my third eye but they did not work. I research for tips on how to open my third eye and my research brought me here. This book has good tips that I never knew but some of these tips are not effective because I tried the m already. I want to try the other tips when I have enough time because it needed to do it with enough preparations.

Most people who do push-ups aren't doing them to their full potential.

After reading your book and practicing the push-up (PUS) according to 'perfect' form was quite a shock to me. I was already aware of the mind-muscle connection idea that you share in your book but when I use the form you suggested in your book it adds a whole new level of challenge!

The techniques you discuss in your book aren't commonly found around the internet so it's not surprising that many people don't take the PUS exercise seriously when thinking about hypertrophy.

To complete a workout based on these PUS is challenging. It is necessary to do smaller rep sets in the training program (as you have suggested) just to finish the workout! Furthermore most people wouldn't know how to do decent form in 'normal' PUS (which are really just easy sets).

It's certainly humbling not being able to do as many reps, but I'm more interested in having a body similar to yours so I'm going to work on my PUS form to get me some bigger pecs.

I recommend this book to anyone who does PUS in their training and to people who think PUS can not be challenging.

No fluff but straight to the point stuff

If you are a beginner and crave to build a solid muscle Chest, there is something for you in this book. If you are an intermediate and want to jump into the next level, there is something for you in this book. If you already have a good looking body (including chest), again there is something for you in this book.

The Author demonstrates everything in detail in terms of this particular exercise that targets chest muscle building and covers every possible detail you can use to exploit every movement, every technique and every underground secret you may not even aware of.

The book comes with pictures and videos in order to make the techniques clear to you. You learn from a person who actually applies what he teaches and you can see results. His results speak for themselves for doubters and skeptic guys. (I actually invest in books when I see direct or indirect results of what the author teaches on him/herself.

I strongly recommend this book. I give it 5 Stars because it’s worth the investment. It helped me to go from useless repetitions to a solid and stable work out that actually build my muscles. No more unlimited repetitions, it’s time rather for slow but correct work-out. Feedback will be added in the future in terms of my progress.

Somewhat disappointing!

Glad to finally see an update on PRS Guitars, but found the book somewhat disappointingly. There were no pictures of several important recent models: 2009 Paul's Dirty 100, 2010 MC-58 McCarty and the 2011 53/10 Limited, etc. The 2011 53/10 Limited was not even mentioned. Also their great line of amplifiers was not highlighted at all. These are some of the best hand-wired and beautiful amplifiers on the market. This was unbelievable for an update that people have waited seven years. And don't discard your previous PRS Books. The 2007 updated edition features a larger format (larger pictures).

Melanie Reinhart is an astounding astrologer, richly knowledgeable and deeply intuitive. This completely new edition is a truly Great Work, matching astrological insight with depth and height psychology and a meaningful exploration of the significance of Chiron in the modern world.

One of Reinhart's great gifts is drawing the reader into deep discussions of profound astrology where the meaning transcends any need for prior knowledge of the subject.

As for any suggestion of negativity, if you are willing to look at the shadow side of yourself, this book will help you not hinder you in owning and integrating what you find.

Worth every penny!

I was hesitant to purchase this book as it is a little pricier than most of the astrology books I currently own but I am so glad I did! I have another book on Chiron but this one is very real and meaningful. If you are looking for insight on Chiron this is the book for you.

Chiron, the wounded healer

Just as the moon was conjunct Chiron, I got this message in my mailbox: Eric, Would You like to share Your experience with �chiron and the healing journey� by melanie reinhart?

The answer is �yes�. this is one of the books that I bought first in paperback, and second as kindle download.

The asteroid chiron does not confine itself to a specific area in the chart, but it tends to alter the frequency level of the planets it gets into contact with. In catalyses a deep initiation process on the backdrop of everyday problems as loss, illness, insecurity etc.

Stanislav Grof coined the term �spiritual crisis�, which applies nicely to shiron's shamanistic way of opening and healing the deep old wounds.

I find �chiron, the healing journey� a wonderful book for the astrologer as well as for those simply engaged in psychic development, mythology and shadow.

To me, this book is an effective tool in the quest: �know thyself�.
