Rewire Your Anxious Brain: How to Use the Neuroscience of Fear to End Anxiety, Panic, and Worry, by Catherine M Pittman PhD, Elizabeth M K

Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research. In the book, you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid. By comparison, the cortex is the center of “worry.” That is, obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen. In the book, Pittman and Karle make it simple by offering specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping into both of these pathways in the brain. As you read, you’ll gain a greater understanding how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result, you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it. The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become. Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally “rewire” the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears.

Review
“From fears to phobias and panic, this how-to guide unravels the mysteries of worry, then delivers strategies that will lead you to a resilient life.”
—Reid Wilson, PhD, author of Don't Panic

“Fear, worry, anxiety, panic, and depression block individuals from living fully. This book does an excellent job of unraveling the mysteries of the brain and how it causes anxiety, thus allowing individuals to take control of their symptoms and manage their lives more effectively.I have used the concepts in this book in treating veterans with PTSD and have seen people become much more functional. Highly-recommended reading.”
—Susan Myers, RN, LCSW, BCD, holistic nurse and board certified diplomate in clinical social work

"This is a unique contribution to a wide array of self-help books for those who suffer with anxiety. The authors explain what we know aboutthe workings of the brain in a fluid style that neither talks down tonor overwhelms the reader. This science becomes the foundation for decreasing bewilderment, fear, and shame. There are straightforward and logicalrecommendations for modifying patterns of anxiety that originatefrom, and are maintained by, differing brain circuitry.”
—Sally Winston PsyD, codirector of the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Institute of Maryland

"Catherine Pittman, a trained behavioral scientist, brings her deep scientific understanding of fear, anxiety, and learning to the world of personal experiences. Few scientists can make this transition from scientific communication to public communication. Pittman, along with coauthor Elizabeth Karle, does this very well indeed.Readers should not be put off by the early presentations of brain mechanisms, because they are surprisingly readable and informative. Moreover, it is information that provides a foundation for readers who have anxiety challenges to use later as they develop effective coping strategies. Readers should find the clear expositions of the where’s, why’s, and how’s of anxiety and its management to be an anxiety-reducing
read.”
—J. Bruce Overmier, PhD, professor emeritus in the graduate facultiesof psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science at the University of Minnesota

Soundly based on biology, easy to understand, and full of helpful advice
By Camber
Though somewhat repetitive, this book is easy to read and clearly explains the basic neurobiology of fear, worry, anxiety, panic, and related conditions such as PTSD and OCD. Drawing on research by Joseph Ledoux and others, the book highlights the central role of the amygdala (the brain's primitive and subconscious 'fear center'), which receives surprisingly scant attention in many other books on this topic. In my opinion, understanding the underlying biology is very helpful, if not essential.

The book also provides helpful evidence-based guidance on techniques to prevent or reduce the intensity of anxiety and related conditions. The key techniques are:

- Get good sleep, aerobically exercise daily, and eat a healthy diet.

- Breathe from the diaphragm/belly, which apparently activates the parasympathetic nervous system and thus counters activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting from fear.

- Remind yourself that thoughts and images are not reality and may be mistaken.

- Disrupt problematic thoughts and images via distractions, play, music, and positive thoughts and images.

- Mindfully 'defuse' from problematic thoughts, images, and sensations, and instead just 'be' in the present moment, calmly observing all that is happening without any need to interpret or respond in any way.

- Meditate, including mindful meditation.

- Deliberately and repeatedly expose yourself to the situations which generate unwarranted fear, in order to rewire the amygdala to no longer subconsciously associate those situations with fear. This can be an uncomfortable experience, but accept the discomfort and know that it will pass, and absolutely do not flee from the situations, because doing so will strengthen the fear.

I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with excessive worry, fear, anxiety, and related conditions.

Helpful Strategies
By Rachael
If you are looking for a book that is just going to provide strategies for how to overcome anxiety, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you are interested in both the neuroscience behind stress and anxiety and learning techniques to cope with those responses, then this is an excellent volume to read. Personally, I agree with the authors that it is often easier to overcome stress when you actually know and understand what is happening to your brain, and how it can manifest itself in physical ways. And while this book is very detailed, I think the authors did a good job of keeping everything easy to understand.

Numerous types of stress are discussed in this book, including the reasons that these types of stress occur and what parts of the brain are responsible for your response. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly trying to make logical sense out of your worry, but I learned from this book that there may not always be a logical reason behind your anxiety. In fact, you may not ever really know why you certain situations, thoughts, sounds, smells, etc., can trigger an episode of panic. The good news is that you don’t have to know. The authors go into great detail to describe techniques that you can use to essentially “rewire” your brain to avoid having stress responses. The book mainly discusses the two different parts of the brain that deal with fear and stress, the amygdala and the cortex. The amygdala is basically your body’s natural fear response system. Your amygdala often works without your ever knowing it, such as when you are driving and instinctively swerve out of the way to avoid hitting another car. The cortex, on the other hand, deals with worry and obsessive thoughts. For example, your cortex is to blame when you are constantly worrying about a possible outcome that will likely not occur. You may have one or both of these types of stress, and the authors provide useful “exercises” that can be used to deal with both of these types of stress.

If you’re reading this review, I’m guessing that you probably don’t care about all of these details though, right? What you really want to know is if the methods in this book really work. I think they could certainly help many individuals who suffer from stress and anxiety. These authors give insightful strategies to help with different types of stress responses, all of which are based on years of research. Your stress isn’t going to go away overnight having read this book, but it certainly may help you learn to cope with your anxiety when it does occur.

This is a great read for comprehending anxiety in general
By kath
In the first chapter it would have been a bit daunting for a non professional counselor or non medical person. This is a great read for comprehending anxiety in general, situations specifically and techniques for resolving issues that may be hindering your full participation and enjoyment of your life. You can use it with your professional counselor/therapist. As a professional it is a great tool for teaching and healing for your patients/clients and peer professionals you may be supporting. Excellent!

1421: The Year China Discovered America, by Gavin Menzies

The incredible true story of the discovery of America before Columbus was even born.Gavin Menzies's extraordinary findings rewrite history.

On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen sailed from its base in China. The ships, huge junks nearly five hundred feet long and built from the finest teak, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di's loyal eunuch admirals. Their mission was "to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. Their journey would last more than two years and circle the globe.

When they returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships, now considered frivolous, were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in China's long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Columbus and circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. Also concealed were how the Chinese colonized America before the Europeans and transplanted to America, Australia, New Zealand and South America the principal economic crops that have fed and clothed the world.

Now, in a landmark historical journey, Gavin Menzies, who spent fifteen years tracing the astonishing voyages of the Chinese fleet, shares the remarkable account of his discoveries and the incontrovertible evidence to support them. His compelling narrative pulls together ancient maps, precise navigational knowledge, astronomy and the surviving accounts of Chinese explorers and the later European navigators to prove that the Chinese had also discovered Antarctica, reached Australia three hundred and fifty years before Cook and solved the problem of longitude three hundred years ahead of the Europeans. 1421 describes the artifacts and inscribed stones left behind by the emperor's fleet, the evidence of wrecked junks along its route -- discovered in locations ranging from the middle of the Mississippi River to tributaries of the Amazon -- and the ornate votive offerings left by the Chinese sailors wherever they landed, in honor of Shao Lin, goddess of the sea.

1421: The Year China Discovered America is the story of a remarkable journey of discovery that rewrites our understanding of history. Our knowledge of world exploration as it has been commonly accepted for centuries must now be reconceived due to this classic work of historical detection.

From Publishers Weekly
A former submarine commander in Britain's Royal Navy, Menzies must enjoy doing battle. The amateur historian's lightly footnoted, heavily speculative re-creation of little-known voyages made by Chinese ships in the early 1400s goes far beyond what most experts in and outside of China are willing to assert and will surely set tongues wagging. According to Menzies's brazen but dull account of the Middle Kingdom's exploits at sea, Magellan, Dias, da Gama, Cabral and Cook only "discovered" lands the Chinese had already visited, and they sailed with maps drawn from Chinese charts. Menzies alleges that the Chinese not only discovered America, but also established colonies here long before Columbus set out to sea. Because China burned the records of its historic expeditions led by Zheng He, the famed eunuch admiral and the focus of this account, Menzies is forced to defend his argument by compiling a tedious package of circumstantial evidence that ranges from reasonable to ridiculous. While the book does contain some compelling claims-for example, that the Chinese were able to calculate longitude long before Western explorers-drawn from Menzies's experiences at sea, his overall credibility is undermined by dubious research methods. In just one instance, when confounded by the derivation of cryptic words on a Venetian map, Menzies first consults an expert at crossword puzzles rather than an etymologist. Such an approach to scholarship, along with a promise of more proof to come in the paperback edition, casts a shadow of doubt over Menzies's discoveries. 32 pages of color illus., 27 maps and diagrams. Book-of-the-Month Club alternate.

From Booklist
Menzies makes the fascinating argument that the Chinese discovered the Americas a full 70 years before Columbus. Not only did the Chinese discover America first, but they also, according to the author, established a number of subsequently lost colonies in the Caribbean. Furthermore, he asserts that the Chinese circumnavigated the globe, desalinated water, and perfected the art of cartography. In fact, he believes that most of the renowned European explorers actually sailed with maps charted by the Chinese. Though most historical records were destroyed during centuries of turmoil in the Far East, he manages to cobble together some feasible evidence supporting his controversial conclusions. Sure to cause a stir among historians, this questionable tale of adventure on the high seas will be hotly debated in academic circles. Margaret Flanagan

A Great Disappointment
By gmcw
I started this book and was quite excited about the possibilities it purported to prove. The farther into the book I read, the more uneasy I became regarding the accuracy of the author's claims. There were too many instances of "This artifact/item proves this fact, however, it has disappeared". When the author came up with claims that pertained to "proofs" of his theory in my home state, he lost me. Had his claims been accurate, it would have been "shouted from the rooftops". I have no doubt that the Chinese explored many of the places the author claimed that they did, however, his "proofs" were merely suppositions and wishful thinking, not verifiable facts.

Not factual at all, not history.
By Jane
Its a historical novel, not much truth in here. But sort of a fun read.
This series is not anything that a person who has studied history for decades will want to read, but if you are looking for some entertainment, then its not bad.
But certainly not a good read for anybody who knows history.

Fascinating Read.
By Duncan Day
This book is a good blend of imaginative historical storytelling, and detailed evidence building to support a case. Mr. Menzies describes not only life in the 15th century, but the voyages and trials of the great treasure fleets from how it might have been experienced. Once drawn into the stories of the voyages and how they might have gone, he spends considerable time walking the reader through his detective work, providing evidence to support his thesis. While not all the evidence is equally compelling or convincing to me (one of the reasons it isn't 5 stars; the other being moments of plodding writing), the idea and the work he has put into it is fascinating and worthy of serious consideration. For the most part, he convinced me, and I now tell my kids this new version of how the world was mapped and how navigational challenges were overcome.

Shakespeare's Lives, by S. Schoenbaum

When S. Schoenbaum's Shakespeare's Lives first appeared over twenty years ago, critics enthusiastically hailed it as a triumph of wit and scholarship. Stanley Wells, the editor of Shakespeare's complete works, called it "an extraordinary achievement....fluent, vivid, and intelligent." Writing in the Saturday Review, Benjamin DeMott described Shakespeare's Lives as "a superbly informed, elegantly composed, intensely readable book," while Terry Eagleton remarked on its "shrewd intelligence." Schoenbaum's study of the changing images of Shakespeare throughout history broke important new ground; but in the years since this book first appeared many scholars have followed his lead, and Shakespeare studies has progressed by leaps and bounds. Now, Schoenbaum, one of "the heroes of Shakespeare scholarship," according to Wells, has revised and up-dated this classic study of Shakespeare and his biographers, taking account of the most recent scholarship, adding a chapter on "Recent Lives," and abridging certain sections.
Schoenbaum takes us on a tour of the countless myths and legends which have arisen to explain the great dramatist's life and work, bringing the story right up to 1989 with the publication of A.L. Rowse's Discovering Shakespeare. In the new edition, the emphasis is on more recent "lives" of Shakespeare, with information culled from such diverse sources as E.A.J. Honigmann's Shakespeare: The "Lost Years" and Richard Ellmann's Oscar Wilde (Wilde's Portrait of Mr W.H. advanced his theory of the Sonnets in fictional form). Besides fanciful theories such as Wilde's, Schoenbaum covers those who have used blatant forgery to construct an imaginary Shakespeare, such as W.H. Ireland and J.P. Collier (the latter would occasionally add his own verse to the Shakespeare canon), and those who have attempted elaborate argumentation to establish the identity of Shakespearean characters (A.L. Rowse claimed to have identified the elusive "Dark Lady" of the Sonnets). From Ben Jonson, whose celebratory verse opens the First Folio of Shakespeare's complete works (published seven years after his death), to Malcolm X, who denied the existence of a historical Shakespeare, Shakespeare's Lives considers virtually the entire legacy of idolatry, heresy, and speculation.
As before, Schoenbaum submits the documentary record of Shakespeare's life to careful consideration. Like a literary detective, he reconstructs as much of the elusive author's life as possible, considering his family history, his economic standing, and his reputation with his peers. The Shakespeare who emerges may not always be the familiar one (he was less vaunted by his contemporaries than we usually believe, for example), but all of Schoenbaum's claims are exquisitely documented.
Even in this revised and abridged version, Schoenbaum's narrative leaves hardly a stone unturned--from Samuel Johnson, Samuel Coleridge, and Alexander Pope to twentieth-century writers like James Joyce, E.K. Chambers, and Anthony Burgess (whose popular life of Shakespeare appeared the same year as the first edition of Schoenbaum's book). Curiousity about Shakespeare has not subsided since the original version of this classic appeared. This new edition will make the latest lives of Shakespeare available to a whole new generation of the Bard's fanatical followers.

a must for serious lovers of shakespeare
By Beauregard
If you love Shakespeare, buy this book--you won't be disappointed. Schoenbaum doesn't discuss the plays, but instead the man who wrote them--or, more specifically, the differing ways that his life has been interpreted. That's right, it's a biography of Shakespeare's biographers, leading us step by step through several centuries of interpreters of the Bard, and the various wacky ways they have interpreted his life. It might not sound compelling, but boy it is. The early portions of the book are good enough, but it really takes off when the author starts to discuss the "Baconian" heretics--authors who have argued that Francis Bacon (or some other aristocratic, and therefore supposedly more intelligent, fop) actually wrote the world's greatest plays. He wonderfully illustrates the bizarreness of the men and women who originated this fanciful claim, and explains how it has unfortunately caught on in the popular imagination. (One of the first "Baconians," the not-coincidentally named Delia Bacon, is a tragically grotesque character worthy of Shakespeare himself.) This is a hefty book that you won't finish in a single sitting, but I still highly recommend it.

Indispensable for Shakespeare Lovers
By Suzanne Cross
I first read Schoenbaum a long time ago and was astounded at the way Shakespeare's career had so many different incarnations, from his popularity in his own time to the legendary status David Garrick awarded him, to the love of readers world-wide (including Dickens and Abraham Lincoln), to the "fashions" in Bardolatry that change and morph to this day. I re-read it recently and he remains one of the great Shakespeare scholars of the 20th century. This book is probably more for readers with some background already in Shakespeare's works, but with a little grounding in the art, you will be amazed at the history.

A superlative tome
By HH
This ample, carefully written, entertaining volume deserves a lengthier review than space permits. It is not only a re-examination of the established facts about Shakespeare's life and career (and those facts remain sparse); it is also a lengthy anecdotal narrative of the successive attempts, beginning humbly in the 17th century and reaching levels of near frenzy in the 18th- and 19th-, to provide a biography, turn legend into fact, forge documents, decipher the works, to imagine, to invent, to exalt or denigrate the personality behind the plays and poems. Schoenbaum's fascination with the motives and temperaments of the individuals behind these efforts is obvious, and he succeeds admirably in making us share his response. It's a big book in all senses of the word; there is a massiveness of research in "Shakespeare's Lives" that a more dilatory man might have taken a lifetime to accomplish.

How to Draw Almost Everything: An Illustrated Sourcebook Paperback – April 15, 2016
by Chika Miyata (Author)
I am a bit over 50 and I have never tried to draw, when I was still a kid I was told just to forget it. Now with all the adult coloring books and the doodles, I thought I would give it a try, and I am having such a GREAT time, I couldn't wait for this book to come out, (I pre-ordered it in January) it arrived today and I couldn't be happier, for someone that doesn't know anything about drawing but wants to try it, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. Book for all ages.. who just want to draw raw + uncooked vs. perform
By Abby Christopher
Accessible, playful, raw, .. infuses joy.. leaves room for learning but mainly encourages improv and .. play. Highly recommend this for all ages. The author says 'have fun!' .. 'have a sense of humor' 'don't take yourself too seriously,' by example.
I look forward to Chika Miyakta's next book!

Excerpt from author's note: "Have fun sketching, and don't worry about perfection. In my opinion, the most interesting drawings are the ones with crooked lines..."

Thinking About Political Reform: How to Fix, or Not Fix, American Government and Politics, by John R. Johannes

Thinking About Political Reform: How to Fix, or Not Fix, American Government and Politics offers the most comprehensive and highly accessible analysis of reform proposals available. It treats both the causes and consequences of structural, procedural, and behavioral problems, assessing a wide variety of reform proposals from the perspectives of political science, economics, law, journalism, and politics.

Author John R. Johannes places reform proposals in the context of seven key standards for sound democratic government. He applies those standards and an up-to-date review of the scholarly literature and current events to the reform agenda, suggesting several approaches to evaluate, for example, the tensions between Congress and the presidency, election systems, or political parties. Johannes reminds students that reforms in one area are bound to have consequences in others, thereby advocating a system-wide approach to reform and a wariness of ad hoc reforms prompted by political events.

Review

"There is nothing else out there on the market today that attempts to tackle the subject of reform in American politics in such a comprehensive and sweeping way."--John P. Forren, Miami University

"This book's competitive advantage is that it is more complete in its coverage of reform ideas across traditional course topics. It includes chapters appropriate for all three parts of the American government course: foundations, politics, and institutions. There are no gaps."--Rodd Freitag, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

"If you want to read a text that makes a pretty grand attempt at uncovering and explaining a huge array of political and electoral reforms and challenges established conventions, you should read this one."--Rick D. Henderson, Texas State University

A must for any thoughtful and intelligent voter
By Barbara K. Clement
Dr. Johannes' insight into the need for political reform today is right on. If you are planning to vote in this coming 2016 presidential election, this book should be number one on your reading list. It is rare to find a scholar who writes well and whose opinions are not skewed by the usual academic lean to the far left. If you want real help in understanding our political processes today, I recommend this book.

Si quieres... lee (Spanish Edition), by Juan Domingo Argüelles

The last thing in the world Thom Creed wants is to add to his father's pain, so he keeps secrets. Like that he has special powers. And that he's been asked to join the League the very organization of superheroes that spurned his dad. But the most painful secret of all is one Thom can barely face himself: he's gay.

But becoming a member of the League opens up a new world to Thom. There, he connects with a misfit group of aspiring heroes, including Scarlett, who can control fire but not her anger; Typhoid Larry, who can make anyone sick with his touch; and Ruth, a wise old broad who can see the future. Like Thom, these heroes have things to hide; but they will have to learn to trust one another when they uncover a deadly conspiracy within the League.

To survive, Thom will face challenges he never imagined. To find happiness, he'll have to come to terms with his father's past and discover the kind of hero he really wants to be.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—At the same time that he's coming to terms with his sexual orientation, basketball star Thom Creed is trying to figure out exactly what his untrained superpowers can do. In an attempt to break away from his seemingly non-understanding father (an ex-hero with something to hide) and homophobic community, Thom runs away, only to find himself in the middle of a multi-hero rescue operation. Using his ability to heal, he keeps an injured woman alive until the League superheroes arrive and impresses them enough to get an invitation to try out for a hero apprentice position. Thom is teamed with an old woman who can see into the future, a spiteful girl who unleashes her power through fire, a sickly boy who is able to inflict disease on anyone, and a demoted hero with insane speed. With superheroes dying in mysterious circumstances, Thom is forced to admit publicly that he is gay in order to prevent a miscarriage of justice, but finds himself cast out of the League. He organizes his ragtag team to figure out what is really going on and to fight society's prejudices as well as the criminal element of the town. The story tackles love, friendship, and the eternal struggle to come to terms with who we really are in a tactful, interesting, and well-developed manner. Although the beginning is a little slow, there are subtle hooks that will keep readers' interest, and once the action picks up, Hero becomes a real page-turner that is worth the wait.—Dylan Thomarie, Johnstown High School, NY

From Booklist
Thom Creed tries not to disappoint his dad, a disgraced caped crusader who now toils as a factory drudge, so he keeps his gay identity and his developing superpowers under wraps. Then he secretly tries out for the prestigious League, joining aspiring heroes in villain-busting adventures that escalate alongside more private discoveries. Written in a wry, first-person voice realistically peppered with occasional slang and slurs, this ambitious first novel from a Hollywood producer doesn't entirely cohere. The alternate-reality framework is too cursory, and the more realistic strands feel overstuffed with problems, even as they incorporate many well-chosen scenes (including Thom's awkward, anonymous first pickup, which goes only as far as a kiss). Still, Moore's casting of a gay teen hero in a high-concept fantasy marks an significant expansion of GLBTQ literature into genres that reflect teens' diverse reading interests; given the mainstream popularity of comics-inspired tales, the average, ordinary, gay teen superhero who comes out and saves the world will raise cheers from within the GLBTQ community and beyond. Phenomenal book for late teens
By Open-Minded Educator
I bought this book with the thought that I might use it during a social justice unit in my middle school English class. While the book proved to be a little too mature for my students (strong language, some pretty explicit sexual remarks), it would be excellent for a high school humanities or senior English class. The book dives into themes that are rarely explored in children's literature. By paralleling the protagonist's struggle with his own sexual orientation with the discovery that he possesses superhuman powers, the reader starts to connect the different ways in which people are outcast in our own, non-comic book society. I strongly recommend this book to anybody, be they a teacher, a student, or just a regular reader who wants to expand their understanding about tolerance and coming of age.

Not For Everyone
By Paul S. Ramey
I bought this book after reading it's review in People magazine for my daughter and I to read...she was busy rereading a Harry Potter book, so I decided to read it first. GOOD THING! This book is much more appropriate for LATE teen and adult readers. It is a beautifully powerful book about the strains of growing up different, and really not feeling accepted. Set in a familiar world of comic book reality, it's points are not missed and you really want to hold the main character as he proceeds through this minefield of life as he makes his way in very extreme conditions. Even when the scenerios become outlandish, this book captivates you...I didn't want to put it down. I would caution that you may not like this book if you are conservative in your views of family and sexual relationships, but this book might help you to open your mind a bit if you are!

About the Author

Hiroko Fujita is a traditional ohanashi obaasan (storytellinggrandma). She spent her childhood in the rural mountain town ofMiharu in Fukushima Prefecture, where she heard hundreds of ancientfolktales from village elders. A graduate of Japan Women's Universitywho was an early childhood education for five decades, she now travelsJapan, teaching young mothers the old tales. The author of thirty-onebooks in Japanese, she lives in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Fran Stallings, a professional storyteller based in Bartlesville,Oklahoma, interpreted for Mrs. Fujita's twelve storytelling tours oftwenty-two American states, Japan and Singapore. Stallings edited andadapted English translations of Mrs. Fujita's storytelling handbookStories to Play With (August House, 1999) and a collection of forty-seventales known throughout Japan, Folktales from the Japanese Countryside(Libraries Unlimited, 2008). Stallings' other publications include articles, stories, songs, and four CDs. Her academic training in biology informsher environmental work as “EarthTeller.”

In 2003, Fujita and Stallings received the National (U.S.)Storytelling Network's International StoryBridge ORACLE Award fortheir work on both sides of the Pacific. They hope that these books willmake Mrs. Fujita's stories available to English-speaking story loverseverywhere.

Translator Makiko Ishibashi attended the University of Tokyo. She lived in St. Louis while her husband did postdoctoral work and theirtwo sons attended American schools. Now their sons are grown, andshe lives in Saitama, Japan, with her husband. Her current interest is inthe ukiyoe (woodblock prints) of Hiroshige, and Edo (the old name forTokyo). She blogs bilingually at “A Hundred Views Of Edo”

Asian Folktales You Won't Find Elsewhere
By T. A. Parkhurst
if you are looking for rare folktales, here is a book of tales collected by Ms. Fujita in the Japanese countryside. This PG-rated collection includes tales of marriage and family life, rural scenes and activities, and much more. Great for libraries, too, these stories were collected and edited by storytellers.

Hidden gem
By J. Mann
A collection of previously unpublished traditional Japanese stories, shared with Fran Stallings by her old friend and storyteller Fujita Hiroko. The two friends have told many stories together, live, during their working collaboration, and this collection brings out their shared enjoyment and love of stories. One for your collection if you enjoy traditional tales, or would like to explore them. The gentle humour and soft words carry concepts worth their weight in gold.

dazzle with enchantment, full of insight
By Mari Selby
Out of the ordinary and the commonplace these stories dazzle with magic and transport us to exotic lands and ancient times. Insight into Japanese culture and sagacity is rare and wonderful to read. Savor each story one at a time like a sweet treat. Or read the book cover to cover in one sitting like some great feast for the heart and mind. We hear the characters in ‘The Contest of Silence’ eating the manju cake - amu, amu, amu and like them we want more of these cakes - stories. The horse went pakkora, pakkora as it clopped along in Horse Dengaku and we can hear the hoofs clicking on the roadside and are immediately caught up in their path. We learn of the Kitsune or Fox trickster who may fool people but it may be for their own good. The title story alone with its age-old wisdom is worth the price of the book!
