Good, but far from I'm the best of the Once Upon a Time Travel books

This story is a cute and quick spin on the Nutcracker. I did enjoy it, but I would be lying if I said that it wasn't a tiny bit disappointing. I get that it's a short story, but it was just a bit too short for my liking. Everything about this story had me wanting more; more character development of Max, more details of his home, more of he and Clara's blooming romance...more everything! Yet sadly, it came up a bit lacking. I really don't think it should have been done as a short story, but rather a full length installment of the Once Upon a Time Travel series. Also, the fact that the romance in this story is basically rated PG, was both surprising and a bit disappointing. One of the things I've always adored about this series, was the odd (but awesome) coupling of graphic sex scenes mixed in with the cute whimsy of the fairytale settings. Jill Miles always made it work and work well at that. This story however, kind of felt like going out to Chinese dinner, but not getting your fortune cookie at the end. All in all though, it was cute and entertaining...it was just missing that extra bit of depth and detail that made the other books so great.

Sugar and spice!

After watching the Nutcracker ballet with my sister and her daugther and then seeing this at Amazon.de I simply had to have this book and it transported me right back into the wonderful story. I adore Muffin, she is one of my favorite fairy godmothers of all time and she is at her witty punny bright and merry best in this novella. The heroine is quite bewildered to find herself in a story she doesn't know anything about but her nutcracker helps her through and I totally fell for him doing that. It is a sugary sweet, christmassy nice story full of laughter and romantic but suspense and thrill too and it transfers the ballet story perfectly in a fantasy novella that keeps you reading right up to the grande finale. Thanks, Jill Myles, for this perfect read for the season (but I am sure it can be enjoyed throughout the year!).

I have to admit, I do not do many reviews. However, I felt compelled to comment on this title. I was pleasantly surprised to see how informative and easy to follow the timeline of this book. By no means does Michael Gannon dig deep into various eras of Florida history. But he does give just the right amount of insight into Florida history during the Spanish occupation through to the Seminole Wars, statehood, Civil War, Industrial Age, and into near present days. There is more than sufficient tidbits of information to keep interest and spark my own research into specific eras of Florida. Consider this book as a terrific overview of Florida's history. This book should find its way into every elementary school.

Critics of Jack Zipes on Amazon often fail to understand that he is not writing for a lay audience. His books are for serious academics -- folklorists, literary scholars, film theorists, etc. And, for those audiences, his work is absolutely indispensable. Zipes has done more for the theorization of folk and fairy tales than almost any other contemporary academic, and his name belongs in conversation with the likes of Alan Dundes, Maria Tatar, Linda Degh, et al. Unfortunately, from the reviews on Amazon it seems people are going in expecting Zipes to read more like Bettelheim, whose simplistic, reductive, and misleading interpretations of fairy tales have done more harm than good in the world of folklore scholarship.

As a folklorist interested in new historicist approaches to literature and film, I find Zipes' work to be canonical and useful for both my own research as well as for teaching undergraduates. My students have responded very strongly to both this book and "Breaking the Magic Spell," as well as select chapters from some of his other works. Zipes is definitely writing for a college level or above, but his prolific work has helped me provide my students with interesting and impactful introductions to difficult academic terrain (such as Marxism, feminism, ideology and inequality, media literacy, etc). The subject matter is familiar for students, which keeps them engaged as Zipes unpacks complex but essential social theory. Of all the books I teach with, students have told me they are most likely to hold on to Zipes at the end of the semester.

The Amazon reviews mostly reflect the experiences of people who were not prepared for the intellectual rigor of Zipes' work. This is not to say that Zipes doesn't deserve to be critiqued by other academics in his field (he does), but that the people who have written reviews of his works on Amazon seem to miss the point entirely. (Or maybe they just don't want to think about how Beauty and Beast is a classist, bourgeois fantasy designed to humanize the aristocracy in the eyes of an oppressed underclass before the French Revolution. After all, it IS much more comfortable to think that story is just an extension of the tepid 'appearances can be deceiving' theme).

If you are up for an intellectual read that challenges the way you think about stories you've known and loved (or hated) since childhood, then this book may be for you. If you want an easily-digestible and fun analysis of fairy tales that just reinforces what you already believe about them, look elsewhere.

Like lead clothing

This book had a lot to say, but I was hard pressed get through it. It was so filled with nominalizations and bloated sentences that it sounded pompous and full of itself. The sentences were weighty and boring, and ran on so long that I had a hard time figuring out what was happening inside that sentence.

About the Author
Valeri Beim is a grandmaster who lives in Austria. He has won numerous tournaments and plays in the Austrian and German leagues. For many years he was the head trainer at the chess school in Odessa, and he was also the trainer of the Israeli Olympiad team. A good buy

So far I own two books of this writer, and I do not regret buying any of them. This book is in the normal GAMBIT publications size, while "Chess Recipes from the GM's Kitchen" was smaller (and with fewer pages).

In this book Mr Beim highlights specific topics of chess strategy, such us : The bishop pair, static and dynamic features, symmetrical pawn structures, transition to an endgame, etc.

For each one there is a separate chapter which includes:

1)A few words about what the chapter to follow will be dealing with.

2)Advises - principles - guidelines, where apropriate. For example in the chapter about static and dynamic features we are presented with the general ideas - strategies of each side. In some chapters I would like to see more of this part.

3)Analysed games as examples : These are well chosen, and the analysis is usually minimized to the area of interest, which makes it easy to follow and focus on the ideas.

4)Exercises. 10-15 for each chapter, not too easy, and some of those really tough. However I solved some of those without including anything from the chapter's knowledge into my thinking process. So I guess I would solve those without reading the chapter...

To sum up: Very good book, well writen and with a structure that is not tiring to follow. However I gave it a 4, as I got the impression that this writer has a lot to say, but wants to say it in many volumes. For example, dynamic features are covered in detail in another book of his, which he already knew he would write ("How to play Dynamic Chess", I think, which I will buy, it's a great book). I am happy I read it and will read it again, I gained valueable knowledge from it, but if I had to pick only 1 out the 3 mentioned, I would pick the one on Dynamic Chess, and if I had to pick only 2, my 2nd would be the Recipes.

High Quality Guide to Middlegame Training

Having previously enjoyed Beim's first book (Chess Recipes from the Grandmasters Kitchen) I was quick to buy Lessons in Chess Strategy. It is truly excellent. Beim's enthusiasm for the subject, combined with his deep knowledge, makes this a text-book on strategy that will surely benefit any intermediate level player.

The material is divided into 124 tasks, and the positions are well-chosen to illustrate the appropriate themes, such as passed pawns, space advantage, zugswang, pawn structures and so on. There is a laudable balance of nice positions from past and present.

Beim is clearly an experienced trainer - as in Chess Recipes he really cares about the reader comprehending the material.

Superb teaching

I got this book after buying the next on Mr Beim's series - How to play dynamic chess. This is powerful stuff... While not for beginners, Mr Beim's style is very methodical and will be useful for players of different levels, from club on up. I particularly enjoy the exercises at the end of each chapters. Looking forward to his next books!

I love this book

I love this book! Sebastien offers his method of balancing 4 types and "stretch" of laughter exercises in a way that gradually builds trust and ease and allows laughter to emerge naturally - along with a wonderful selection of 505 great exercises organized in these 4 categories to choose from!
I highly recommend it for anyone building a laughter club or "laughter wellness" practice!
