About the Author
Koushun Takami was born in 1969 in Amagasaki near Osaka and grew up in Kagawa Prefecture of Shikoku, where he currently resides. After Graduating from Osaka University with a degree in literature, he dropped out of Nihon University. From 1991 to 1996 he worked for the prefectural news company Shikoku Shinbun. Battle Royale, completed after Takami left the news company, was a finalist for the Kadokawa Mystery Prize, but ultimately lost due to the controversy the novel's content provoked among jury members. With its publication in Japan in 1999, Battle Royale received widespread support from young readers and became a best seller. In 2000, it was adapted as a manga and made into a popular feature film.

Must-buy for those who want a great book with bloody deaths and a decent plot!

Battle Royale.
The book picks up and seldom goes down - if you're really into a very gritty and an unnecessarily gory high school showdown - immediately purchase this book.
I was very surprised by how detailed this book was. If you get queasy by thinking of these things, I do not recommend.
The characters were nice and fleshed out (albeit somewhat hard to manage due to the dozens of names...), the action was spot on, and the plot itself consistently stayed interesting.

Excellent Book But It is Dark

This is a dark book. I mention that in advance because I don't usually read fiction this dark. But this was a referral from someone I knew and liked, so I bought a copy. This English translation, by the way, is excellent.
The basic setup of this book is that a 9th grade class has been selected to go to an island and fight until only student is alive. They are given collars that track their every move, and the people in charge can hear everything they're saying. Sections of the island are off limits at different times, and if they happen to be in an off-limit area, the collar will explode, thereby killing them. So they have to constantly be on the move.
Three main characters emerge in the story, though we are given pretty much the point of view and background of every character in it. This can slow down some of the reading, even though I will admit it made for some heart wrenching moments and really brought home some of the horror of an entire class being told they must kill each other. This is a violent book. The author goes into detail over the way everyone dies.
But that being said, there is a spark of hope in the middle of all the horror that takes place. This emerges best in the three main characters, two boys and a girl, who are desperately trying to find a way to stay alive and escape the island. I won't give the ending away, but it was one of the best endings I've ever read in a book. There was a great twist, and though I can't say this book gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling, it did satisfy me. I'd recommend this to people who are okay with reading darker fiction. I wouldn't recommend it to those who prefer light reading.

I saw the movie first and ever since I watched it, it has truly become my all-time favorite film. And the novel is just as amazing, if not better. My next goal is collecting all the manga volumes and read the whole series. If you enjoy drama, suspense, horror, blood, guts, and truly messed up situations as this class finds itself in, do yourself a favor and read this gem. 5/5
