When seven-year-old Anthony Little Eagle is found dead on the concrete patio beneath the balcony of a foster home, police and child welfare officials determine that it was a tragic accident. Sylvia Jensen, the foster care supervisor, comes to suspect that the boy's death may have involved foul play and she is launched on a journey to find the truth no matter what the cost. She forms an unlikely alliance with J.B. Harrell, an investigative reporter, to search for the killer, defying her superiors and risking her career-even her own life-to ensure that justice is done. In the process both Sylvia and J.B. are forced to face their own pasts and learn to live with them. At The Center is about the danger of secrets, the power of belonging and how much bravery it takes to finally close the distance between who we pretend to be and who we really are.

At the Center will claim the center of your heart
By Mary
‘At the Center’ by Dorothy Van Soest is a novel that insinuates itself in your heart from the first sentence, and it just does not let go. And neither will you be able to let go of the book! Be forewarned. Once you start reading this book, you will not be able to put it down.

Anthony – and it is Anthony, not Tony – Anthony Little Eagle is at the center of the book, but so too is Jamie, and very quickly so too are Sylvia Jenson and J B Harrell. Sylvia, a social worker and J B, an investigative reporter work together to claim justice for Anthony Little Eagle’s death.
Each character in the book is deeply flawed, and profoundly human and humane. These are people you immediately care about. These are people whose side you are on, people who make mistakes and suffer for them; people who go on anyway. These are people who will come alive for you as you read.

At the Center is a well told story, with an engaging plotline with just enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages; with an ending that both surprises and satisfies. You MUST read this book. It will touch your heart. It will make you think. It will make you want to get up out of your chair and do something – some thing – to bring more love and justice into our world.

... Center has reinforced her standing with me as my favorite new author
By Bob B
The offering of Dorothy Van Soest's second novel At The Center has reinforced her standing with me as my favorite new author. Although identifying herself as a political and community activist, she never gets up on to proverbial high horse to preach to us. Rather, Dorothy introduces soulful issues she cares about by unveiling dark netherworld's and obscure bureaucratic social service systems we all underwrite with our tax dollars but that most will never come into contact with. After exposing opposing perspectives through story development, Ms. Soest respects her audiences ability to do "the next right thing" by re-examining their own personal belief structures. The reader is best served by blocking out a period of time to spend with Dorothy's books, for these are page turners better to be devoured rather than casually read. There is so much meat on the bones of her characters, the reader is able to delve into their psyche's as far as they dare. Soon, the lines become blurred between them and us. One does not need to be a former social worker to appreciate these works. But as one myself, Dorothy transported me back in time to re-experience the overwhelming demands of a Child Welfare Caseworker. My highest accolades for a job well done. I look forward to reading you for years to come.

At the Center is a five star read for anyone who loves a compelling story masterfully told!
By Paul W. Murphey
Book review:
At The Center, by Dorothy Van Soest. Apprentice House,
Loyola University Maryland, 2015. 305 pages. Soft cover.
The title, At the Center, does not appear until late in the book. This oft used literary device has been used quite effectively by the author. By the time the reader reaches that point he or she has already discerned multiple possibilities including personal, sociological, psychological, cultural, ethnic, geographic, philosophical among them.
This riveting story of tensions between personal moral principles and practices and adherence to bureaucratic policies and procedures continually opens new possibilities of resolution. The book’s basic plot is subdivided from the start into two powerful parallel sub-plots which ultimately coalesce in the dramatic climax of the story. Hints of resolution are given along the way as characters are marvelously fleshed out. Just as it is a magnificent indictment of good intentions gone awry it is at the same time a startling affirmation of the power of growth, perception, and redemption.
While it is a work of fiction in which the clash of cultures/ethnicities – Native American and White – has devastating effect, it also portrays how personalities that initially mistrust or misread one another are able to work together for a higher good than their own evolving identities in an uncomfortable, but compelling cause.
The author is careful to maintain that At The Center is a novel, a work of fiction in which persons, places, or incidents are not coincident with historically verifiable information from newspaper archives or even court documents. Yet, the author’s background which has led her to now being Dean Emeritus of the School of School Work of the University of Washington has provide the seminal knowledge from which the story grows. She does not want the reader to see in it isolated incidents in which the innocent are victimized by those they trusted. However, her gripping story cannot help but grasp the reader’s mind and conscience making the story and the people in it as real as any one might meet in an office of human services or in some foster homes.
There is, in the end, a triumphant declaration of the persistence of virtue and duly rewarded integrity but on the way there are times of weeping and wondering. There is nothing gratuitous about this exceptional novel. Everything has its clearly expressed purpose even the little joys and sorrows of everyday experiences along the way.
The reader may not remember the names of the well-wrought characters once the journey has ended, but he or she can never put away the unforgettable situations they both confront and create.
At The Center is a five star read for anyone who loves a compelling story masterfully told.!

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments, by David Foster Wallace

In this exuberantly praised book - a collection of seven pieces on subjects ranging from television to tennis, from the Illinois State Fair to the films of David Lynch, from postmodern literary theory to the supposed fun of traveling aboard a Caribbean luxury cruiseliner - David Foster Wallace brings to nonfiction the same curiosity, hilarity, and exhilarating verbal facility that has delighted readers of his fiction, including the bestselling Infinite Jest.

Amazon.com Review
David Foster Wallace made quite a splash in 1996 with his massive novel, Infinite Jest. Now he's back with a collection of essays entitled A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. In addition to a razor-sharp writing style, Wallace has a mercurial mind that lights on many subjects. His seven essays travel from a state fair in Illinois to a cruise ship in the Caribbean, explore how television affects literature and what makes film auteur David Lynch tick, and deconstruct deconstructionism and find the intersection between tornadoes and tennis.

These eclectic interests are enhanced by an eye (and nose) for detail: "I have seen sucrose beaches and water a very bright blue. I have seen an all-red leisure suit with flared lapels. I have smelled what suntan lotion smells like spread over 21,000 pounds of hot flesh . . ." It's evident that Wallace revels in both the life of the mind and the peculiarities of his fellows; in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again he celebrates both.

From Publishers Weekly
Like the tennis champs who fascinate him, novelist Wallace (Infinite Jest; The Broom of the System) makes what he does look effortless and yet inspired. His instinct for the colloquial puts his masters Pynchon and DeLillo to shame, and the humane sobriety that he brings to his subjects-fictional or factual-should serve as a model to anyone writing cultural comment, whether it takes the form of stories or of essays like these. Readers of Wallace's fiction will take special interest in this collection: critics have already mined "Derivative Sport in Tornado Alley" (Wallace's memoir of his tennis-playing days) for the biographical sources of Infinite Jest. The witty, insightful essays on David Lynch and TV are a reminder of how thoroughly Wallace has internalized the writing-and thinking-habits of Stanley Cavell, the plain-language philosopher at Harvard, Wallace's alma mater. The reportage (on the Illinois State Fair, the Canadian Open and a Caribbean Cruise) is perhaps best described as post-gonzo: funny, slight and self-conscious without Norman Mailer's or Hunter Thompson's braggadocio. Only in the more academic essays, on Dostoyevski and the scholar H.L. Hix, does Wallace's gee-whiz modesty get in the way of his arguments. Still, even these have their moments: at the end of the Dostoyevski essay, Wallace blurts out that he wants "passionately serious ideological contemporary fiction [that is] also ingenious and radiantly transcendent fiction." From most writers, that would be hot air; from one as honest, subtle and ambitious as Wallace, it has the sound of a promise.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This collection of eight diverse articles, following on the heels of Foster's immense, popular novel, Infinite Jest (LJ 1/96), opens with "Derivative Sport in Tornado Alley," an autobiographical sketch that skillfully interweaves mathematics and tennis with the vicissitudes of Midwestern meteorology. A brilliant analysis of television's role in popular culture, a look at the Illinois State Fair, a review of filmmaker David Lynch, and a report on Wallace's week-long adventure on a luxury cruise are among the pieces that follow. Wallace's style is highly personal?some might say eccentric?but his writing is always intelligent, witty, and engaging. Libraries serving discriminating readers will want this book in their collections..?William Gargan, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., CUNY

Best Introduction to One of America's Finest Young Authors
By A Customer
"A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" is a collection of seven essays originally published between 1992 and 1996. They range over a variety of topics and, while somewhat uneven in quality, demonstrate that David Foster Wallace is one of contemporary America's most intelligent and imaginative writers.
The best of the essays are two that were originally published in Harper's magazine, "Getting Away from Being Pretty Much Away from It All" and the title essay, "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again".
In "Getting Away from Being Pretty Much Away from It All", Wallace relates a visit to the Illinois State Fair in 1993 in a style that alternates between intellectual ponderousness and hilariously obsessive description and commentary on the minutest details of his experience. Approaching his task with the wonder of a child, Wallace, in a passage illustrative of his style (or at least one aspect of it), reflects: "One of the few things I still miss from my Midwest childhood was this weird, deluded but unshakable conviction that everything around me existed all and only For Me. Am I the only one who had this queer deep sense as a kid?-that everything exterior to me existed only insofar as it affected me somehow?-that all things were somehow, via some occult adult activity, specially arranged for my benefit? . . . The child leaves a room, and now everything in that room, once he's no longer there to see it, melts away into some void of potential or else (my personal childhood theory) is trundled away by occult adults and stored until the child's reentry into the room recalls it all back into animate service."
Similarly, in the title essay, Wallace spends nearly a hundred pages describing a seven-night Caribbean cruise on a Celebrity Cruise Lines megaship. Wallace ponders the fantasy the Celebrity brochures are selling, wanting to believe "that maybe this Ultimate Fantasy Vacation will be enough pampering, that this time the luxury and pleasure will be so completely and faultlessly administered that my Infantile part will be sated." But it will not be, for, as Wallace relates in another ponderous/humorous philosophical musing: "But the Infantile part of me is insatiable-in fact its whole essence or dasein or whatever lies in its a priori insatiability. In response to any environment of extraordinary gratification and pampering, the Insatiable Infant part of me will simply adjust its desires upward until it once again levels out at its homeostasis of terrible dissatisfaction." It's like watching a show like "The Love Boat" filtered through a humorous Heideggerian lens.
In both essays, Wallace brilliantly and humorously captures his experience, writing obsessive and, at times, gut wrenchingly funny commentary on everything from the baton twirling competition at the Illinois State Fair (which had me laughing out loud while riding the exercise bike at the YMCA, drawing querulous stares) to the dangers of the vacuum sewage system on board the Celebrity cruise ship. And the humor is magnified, again and again, by footnote after digressive footnote, each microscopically elaborating Wallace's observations, commentaries and deductions.
Another outstanding essay is Wallace's piece on director David Lynch ("David Lynch Keeps His Head"). Originally published in Premiere magazine, it is an incisive examination of Lynch's films commingled with a typically zany journalistic relation of Wallace's visit to the shooting of Lynch's "Lost Highway" in 1995.
For anyone who has read Wallace's doorstop of a novel, "Infinite Jest", there is another essay here that is worth reading, "E Unibus Pluram: Television and U.S. Fiction". Here, Wallace provides an analytical view of how fiction has changed in the U.S. over the past forty years and how fiction has been influenced by pervasive cultural presence of television. It is an essay full of thoughtful musings, although I found it, at times, too long and disjointed to keep my full attention. If any piece in this collection deserves editing, this is it.
The other essays include a fascinating essay on Wallace's visit to a professional tennis tournament (and, in particular, Michael Joyce, "whose realness and approachability and candor are a big reason why he's whom I end up spending the most time watching and talking to"), a piece on Wallace's adolescent days playing competitive tennis in Illinois (and the way play was affected by the winds and geometry and so forth), and a short book review that delves into the long-standing topic of "the death of the author".
"A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" is ultimately the best introduction to the writing of David Foster Wallace, a collection I strongly recommend to anyone interested in contemporary American fiction and this brilliant young writer.

Very good
By J.F. Quackenbush
David Foster Wallace is a gifted writer and always a joy to read. His fiction is groundbreaking, and as this book proves, his nonfiction may even be better.
"A supposedly fun thing" is a collection of essays that are ostensibly stabs at journalism, the big joke being that Wallace is no journalist. He comes off as an endearingly neurotic-bordering-on-pathologically-self-concious red headed step child of Hunter S. Thompson. In fact, it could even be stated that this book is a sort of postmodern inversion of "The Great Shark Hunt", where Thompson's diving in head first to live inside the events he reports is replaced by Wallace's endearing midwestern unwillingness to get in the way and fear of making a nuisance and/or humiliating spectacle of himself.
Mixed in with all that, though, are startling on point revelations about the state of American Culture, what it means to be an american, the nature of art, and the human condition, which one normally doesn't expect from works about TV, Tennis, State Fairs, or Carribean Pleasure Cruises(in the title essay).
While it may not be as great an accomplishment as Infinite Jest (and the comparison to that magnificent book is the only reason this is getting four stars instead of five), "Supposedly Fun Thing" is without a doubt an incredible read and well worth the price of entry.

When he's on he's on, when he's not he's not
By A Customer
I think David Foster Wallace is a brilliant writer, but can't really hit the target all the time. Either he is totally on top of something in describing it, or he writes himself into an intellectual loop that only he appreciates. When i read his stuff, i almost wonder if he is too intelligent for his audience, in that he tries to write about pop culture and similar themes that appeal to the average reader with such strength and knowhow that he seems like he's a genius stuck in a kid's mind and his descriptions of the kid's world can become too complicated for the kid to enjoy. That said, this book is well worth it, if not for the title essay on board a cruise ship which is hilarious then for the essay on amercian writing in the television age. There is a remark about irony in that essay which just blew my top off, it was great. The other notable essay is his "personal" review and account of a state fair, which is also equally funny. As for the others, i wasn't all that interested, in that i found them too wholly theoretical and dull. However, don't let this stop you, his writing is so original and fresh that its worth buying, not only for what it can give, but for what it exposes you to. Well worth it.

Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (American Empire Project), by Robert Dreyfuss

The first complete account of America's most
dangerous foreign policy miscalculation: sixty years of support for Islamic fundamentalism

Devil's Game is the gripping story of America's misguided efforts, stretching across decades, to dominate the strategically vital Middle East by courting and cultivating Islamic fundamentalism. Among all the books about Islam, this is the first comprehensive inquiry into the touchiest issue: How and why did the United States encourage and finance the spread of radical political Islam?

Backed by extensive archival research and interviews with dozens of policy makers and CIA, Pentagon, and foreign service officials, Robert Dreyfuss argues that this largely hidden relationship is greatly to blame for the global explosion of terrorism. He follows the trail of American collusion from support for the Muslim Brotherhood in 1950s Egypt to links with Khomeini and Afghani jihadists to cooperation with Hamas and Saudi Wahhabism. Dreyfuss also uncovers long-standing ties between radical Islamists and the leading banks of the West. The result is as tragic as it is paradoxical: originally deployed as pawns to foil nationalism and communism, extremist mullahs and ayatollahs now dominate the region, thundering against freedom of thought, science, women's rights, secularism--and their former patron.

Wide-ranging and deeply informed, Devil's Game reveals a history of double-dealing, cynical exploitation, and humiliating embarrassment. What emerges is a pattern that, far from furthering democracy or security, ensures a future of blunders and blowback.

If you want to know the origins of Al Qaeda, you need to read this.
By Michael D.
I gave this a 4-star rating because the biases the writer holds still come out in some of his explanations that I don't agree with.

However, American foreign policy is a continuation of English Imperial foreign policy. Every couple hundred years, someone else takes the empire torch, and continues the same nightmare.

Our CIA, Mossad and the British played a game that backfired. You'll have to find another book on AIPAC and US Lobbying to learn who really benefits. This book is an excellent look into the failures of manipulating radicals for potential political gain.

Whether you have a friend who is Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian or flat out Socialist; they deserve to know the historical lessons tom playing the devil's game of empire building.

Blowback
By Gianmarco Manzione
Anyone interested in learning about the true dynamics behind Hamas's reportedly "shocking" victory in recent Palestinian elections may want to pursue this book's many stirring revelations about Hamas's roots. Dreyfuss reports that Israeli intelligence--particularly the Mossad--not only endorsed but participated in the creation and development of Hamas as an organization that could be used to defeat the PLO. "In the early 1980s", Dreyfuss writes, "Israel supported the Islamists on several fronts. It was, of course, supporting the Gaza and West Bank Islamists that, in 1987, would found Hamas . . . They were trying to defeat Arab nationalism with Muslim zealots." Hamas's recent electoral victory was hardly the surprise that mainstream media reported it to be. In reality, it was a rather predictable response to a gradual increase in support for Hamas over recent years inspired by the marginalization of Arafat and the PLO by Bush and Sharon (conspicuously absent from Dreyfuss's analysis, however, is that corruption within the Fatah party also contributed to Hamas's surge in popularity). As Dreyfuss's book documents, "in 1996, only 15 percent of Palestinians backed the Islamists", but, by 2002, that support had risen to 42 percent.

Contrary to what some may think, "Devil's Game" helps readers understand that Islamic fundamentalists are adamantly opposed to Arab nationalist movements such as Arafat's PLO on religious grounds. This includes opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state, a concept of far less importance to Islamists than their agenda of "first Islamizing Palestine and the Arab world." Admittedly, one cannot help but wonder whether Dreyfuss shoots himself in the foot here, given that a major contention of his introduction is that peace between Palestinians and Israelis would end much of the current strife between east and west. Dreyfuss's analysis opens the door to another possibility--though apparently without the author's comprehension: perhaps Islamist assertions that tensions between Israel and Palestinians motivates their campaign of terror is actually a front designed to perpetuate their fundamentalist indoctrination of the region. The PLO's association with movements to "modernize" the Arab world by allowing for a comparatively more secular society provoked the bitter and vengeful disdain of Islamists. While the PLO sought to "secularize" The Islamic University in Gaza, for example, the Muslim Brotherhood from which Hamas emerged fought violently to "preserve its Islamist character".

Reading Dreyfuss's book within the context of Hamas's recent triumph further enhances the allure of this absorbing read. It becomes especially amusing, for instance, to listen to Israeli officials denounce Hamas as a terrorist organization in the wake of their recent democratic victory--as if they didn't know what Hamas was back when they found it convenient to shake hands with them. Israeli officials continue to brilliantly manipulate Islamists to their advantage, as evidenced by Sharon's strategically-timed visit to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount in 2000 just when a "comprehensive deal" was about to be achieved between Barak, Arafat and Clinton. The temple visit was calculated to destroy these negotiations by inciting Islamists into violence, and it worked with stunning and terrifying success.

The CIA translated the Islamists' violent resistance to nationalism in the Arab world as vehement anti-communism that could be used to stave off the USSR's influence in the region. The U.S. routinely supported Islamist movements from the early stages of the Cold War era on into much more recent years, forging relationships with any fundamentalist group or leader that American intelligence viewed as a tool against communism, despite knowledge of their involvement in terrorism or human rights abuses. The cataclysmic flaw in this policy became especially apparent after the U.S. left Afghan freedom fighters out to dry when the USSR withdrew from battle there. An entire force of CIA-trained Jihadists was abandoned without any regard for where they would invest their acquired skills, leaving a wasteland of warlords to reign over an Afghanistan that would soon give birth to the Taliban and bin-Laden's Al-Qaeda organization, which absorbed much of the suddenly unemployed freedom fighters into a militantly anti-western army whose influence spread across many nations. "We knew exactly who these people were, and what their organizations were like, and we didn't care" says a Rand corporation expert on political Islam. While Dreyfuss's notably balanced investigation into this topic tends not to explicitly link 9/11 to the history of American policy in the mid-east, it is fairly difficult for the reasonable reader to conclude otherwise. Even Dreyfuss cannot help but indulge in the ominous observation that the consequences of this environment "would become painfully obvious on September 11, 2001." Such a conclusion is consistent with the kind of "blowback" which, as Dreyfuss's narrative suggests, was an inevitable consequence of American ignorance, avarice, arrogance and fear.

While Dreyfuss consistently characterizes America's approach to fundamental Islamist movements as a naive policy based on an ignorant underestimation of the fundamentalist movement, the boundless strategic and corporate advantage behind Western and Israeli support for Islamic fundamentalism over the past 60 years suggests that they knew exactly what they were doing and simply did not care about possible consequences. It may not be a matter of ignorance, but rather a matter of willful near-sightedness without any regard for future implications of current policies. Such "near-sightedness" appears to have been motivated in no small part by an American Cold War strategy that favored the interests of international corporations in the Arab world, including funds for the dissemination of Islamist propaganda and visits to Eisenhower's Oval Office by Muslim fundamentalist organizer and likely U.S. intelligence agent Said Ramadan, provided by such companies as Aramco, Exxon, Mobil, Texaco, U.S. Airlines, Pan Am, TWA and Chevron. You do the math.

Two perfect--if not essential--companion pieces to Dreyfuss's excellent book are Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" and "the Sorrows of Empire", which further explore the motives behind American exploits in the mid-east while documenting their tragic ramifications for global stability.

Best Evidence of the Origins of Moslem Fundamentalism
By Forensic CPA
Robert Dreyfuss has produced the most comprehensive and accurately sourced evidence of the monster that was artificially created by first the British and later by our flawed and disastrous intelligence apparatus to protect big oil and arms dealers at the expense of millions of lives lost, displaced refugees, cultures decimated and terrorism worldwide. This is a must read for all who are in search of the true origins of the artificially created Moslem Fundamentalism.

The Age of Reason, by Thomas Paine

Thomas Paines The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology, published in three parts from 1794, was a bestseller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. Promoting a creator-God while advocating reason in the place of revelation, Paines controversial pamphlet caused his native British audience, fearing the results of the French Revolution, to receive it with more hostility than their American counterparts. This passionate and engaging recording of Paine s classic is as certain to provoke modern readers to thought as it did with his original audience.

The sheer scope of evidence offered as well as the arguments presented make this a must-read for anyone who seriously contemplates the role of religion and belief in our scoiety. I would suggest this as a must read for everyone preparing for a life in the religious sector - whether minister or priest or rabbi or imam. These are not necessarily individual arguments that need to be addressed (though they are pretty staggering as such); but taken as a whole, a truly "person of faith" needs to explain (to himself, if no one else) how these items Paine presents fit into the beliefs held so strongly.

Shape my current philosophy
By Jim
Paine does a good job of dissecting Christianity and putting it in perspective. Coming from a catholic upbringing I found this to be an influential book in reforming my opinions to be opinions and not regurgitated church speak. I'd recommend reading Chirstopher Hitchen's "God is Not Great" afterwards for an even further atheistic book. Hitchens debates a few of Paine's points on the ability of any god to be benevolent.

On a non theological point, I generally love Thomas Paine's writings. An obscure pamphlet that I enjoy is "Agrarian Justice." It sort of pushes for what is the modern movement of basic income.

Thanks, I Needed That!
By Daniel R. Retzer
At 53, I'm finally willing to listen to this great book. Loved the first part, kinda skimmed the second part because it got little tedious in the details as he did a more than thorough job of exposing inconsistencies in the Bible. His message is very good for those of us challenging our inherited beliefs, yet think he could've toned down some of the inflammatory language and perhaps would've had more people at his funeral. As Mark Twain wrote-"I must studiously and faithfully unlearn a great many things I have somehow absorbed." This book is helpful if you, like me, have a lot to unlearn.
