About the Author
Norman Tyler, FAICP, is faculty and former director of the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Michigan University. He has also taught at the University of Michigan and Penn State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a registered architect. He has served on the board of the Michigan Association of Planning, the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and a founding member of the Ann Arbor Preservation Alliance.

A Great Introduction to Historic Preservation

Having recently purchased an older home in an historic neighborhood, I thought it would be a good idea to aquaint myself with the topic of historic preservation. Norman Tyler's "Historic Preservation" was originally written as a text for a college class on historic preservation. His purpose was to expose his students to the major themes in the field of preservation.

The book starts with a philosophical overview of preservation and moves onto chapters dealing with historic districts and the legal basis for preservation. I found his chapter on the documentation and designation of individual historic properties to be most valuable. Tyler concludes with chapters on design issues, preservation technology, downtown reviatalization and preservation economics.

This book is a well written introduction that will get you started in learning more about historic introduction. Highly recommended.

Most readable and comprehensive preservation book

For the past seven years I have worked full time as a historic preservation professional, compiling historic resource surveys, writing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, and a wide variety of other preservation related projects. I serve on our local historic district commission and have just completed a city-wide survey of Kalamazoo's historic resources. Currently I am also teaching Historic Preservation at Western Michigan University and I was delighted to find Norm Tyler's book. This book is an excellent resource for the beginning preservationist, whether they be a student in a formal academic setting or someone who just likes old buildings. My students find it to be very readable and comprehensive. I am especially pleased to find the variety of real-life examples Tyler presents reflecting the way preservation is practiced and not just idealistic theory. This book was the preferred Christmas gift among preservationists in my area in 2000. I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in preserving our history.

Historic Preservation: A Fresh View

Norm Tyler's new book is a much needed addition to the literature on Historic Preservation. Loaded with fresh examples of the myriad preservation activities taking place across the nation, it also details the context of the movement through analysis of the icons, both human and idealogical, of historic preservation. Clear, concise, and very readable, it will appeal to both the professional and avocationist alike. The inclusion of basic economic, social, and architectural impacts in historic preservation are welcome contributions, and the various charts and lists are extremely useful. I use it at the graduate level as the companion to Fitch's classic: "Historic Preservation."

Black Gold Highlights Great Historical Novel

In an exciting historical adventure, Devil's Pocket, Fred B. McKinley brings us sex and secrets during the times when black gold was the lure for men striving to make their fame and fortune. More, he gives us three family stories that twine and intertwine so fully that murder had to result--secrets always come out! McKinley uses his knowledge and research for his earlier book, Black Gold to Bluegrass, a nonfiction account of the second Spindletop oil boom that occurred in 1925 in Beaumont, Texas. With this background, he has created a thrilling first novel that pulls readers into the time and feelings of those who lived and searched for the rich oil lands in early America.

The main thrust of the book follows the life of Morgan, a young ambitious man who moved quickly and easily from one job to another as he sought to secure his financial future. While ambitious, he was also a man who loved and respected his family, working diligently to provide support and a home for his mother and sister.

Rachael fell in love with Morgan upon first sight. She was the daughter of a rich man and the granddaughter of an even richer man! Morgan had come to Rachael's father to seek financial support in one of his ventures. Thoughts of Rachael or any other woman were far from his plans, as he became friends with her father. Many years went by as Rachael waited and longed for Morgan to notice and come to love her.

A simple love story? Not!

While waiting for Morgan, Rachael foolishly flirts with the wrong man, and because he doesn't listen to her when she tells him to "stop," she later finds herself pregnant. Rachael wants both to keep her child and to not have to admit that she is hers. Her lies later leave her daughter in the same situation and with the same man--her father!

As Morgan is busily making an honorable name for himself and working continuously to move forward toward his goals, oil is struck at Spindletop and he gets a touch of the "fever" that many men followed and for which many men failed. Morgan had his sights set on leasing land that he felt would be rich with oil. The only problem was that Rachael's grandfather owned it! Morgan went to his friend, Rachael's father, hoping to work through him to gain support to lease his father-in-law's land, but they had been enemies since the birth of Rachael since his daughter had died giving birth. However, there was one thing that the two men had in common--a love for Rachael so strong that they could put aside their estrangement and secretly work toward making Rachael happy; i.e., married to Morgan!

Devil's Pocket was the bait...

Oil was struck there--richer even than Spindletop! But at what cost? For in the end, Morgan and his sister were dead and so was Rachael, her father, and her grandfather.

Susannah Fletcher, a granddaughter, was one of the few left. She wore a tarnished cross from a grandmother she had never known. And she was given her grandmother's diary to haunt her until she found the true story of what had happened to the family members, now all gone.

The early 1900's were hard times. Women were often left to carry the burden of children from lost loves. Men left to try to find the fortunes that they knew they were due. Some found them; most did not. Devil's Pocket presents the drama behind those lustful times. McKinley may have written the fiction; but readers will easily and quickly believe that all of the events could easily have been real. He has created characters you will hate immediately. Some are crafty and selfish and want their own way. Others love and work hard to provide for their families. They were killed due to greed, love, pride, but most of all, fear.

Readers interested in historical fiction will find this a well-written, well-researched story of the time when black gold fever touched our lands. Devil's Pocket, hopefully, will not be the last story about this time period. This reader is already looking for a McKinley sequel!

A Great Novel

Fred McKinley's Devil's Pocket vividly captures the aura of an oil boomtown in early twentieth-century Southeast Texas with memorable characters and an intricate plot that covers more than a century. This novel is hard to put down. It held my attention from beginning to end as it built up to a horrifying and shocking climax. I highly recommend Devil's Pocket to anyone who enjoys an intergenerational, suspenseful saga set in an important era of American history that has been much less used in fiction than the Civil War and World War II time-periods. A person who reads Devil's Pocket will gain much insight into the culture of the period in which our civilization changed from being limited to horse-and-buggy-type transportation to being powered by oil and gasoline.

Madness in great ones must not unwatched go

Clifford Leech begins his treatment of 'Tragedy ' with a chapter of citations from many of the most well- known writers about Tragedy, Aristotle, Nietzsche, Bradley ,George Steiner. He then begins his own discussion most naturally with the Greeks, the true inventors of 'tragedy' ( goat- song ) as we understand it. He discusses Aristotle 's theory of tragedy, and then the three great Greek exemplars Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and takes up through modern times, though surprisingly does short shrift with an area he knows much about, and one most central to our whole understanding of Tragedy, Elizabethan Shakespearean Tragedy .

In speaking of Greek tragedy he reminds us, that the suffering of tragedy leads to a kind of , what he calls, 'growing "These dramatists offered no promise of an after- life of bliss for the man who won to such recognition: the thing was good in itself. It was good for man to know what man is, how guilty he is. There was a kind of 'redemption' in the act of 'recognition' itself.'

In perhaps the most interesting chapter of the work Leech talks about the Tragic hero. He speaks of the Tragic Hero as being a somehow 'fuller kind of being' than most of us. As I understood it the ' tragic hero ' is by his nature an aristocrat, a king, a prince. If he were not high- up how could he possibly go through the 'fall' that Tragedy is.

The Tragic hero after all is one whose 'hamartia'( or fatal flaw) somehow leads to his downfall. The excess of Macbeth's ambition, is a classic example. But as Leech points out there are cases where the situation is more ambiguous ,as in the fall of Oedipus whose failure to see may in some deep way be more a question of Fate than of Freedom.

This work is a small one and does not touch deeply upon many of the greatest questions raised by the Critics of Tragedy. It does however provide a certain insight as when Leech talking about the idea that our concept of Tragedy has developed only in the past two centuries tries to define the 'tragic sense of life.'It is when we understand that 'that all men exist in an evil situation, and if they are aware, are anguished because they are aware. Hegel emphasized a necessary opposition of forces dividing man from man and man from himself, Kierkegaard a desperate need to break out from an imposed pattern, Nietzsche the joy that can come when in tragic writing Dionysius and Apollo are made to swell together.'

I found this work again interesting at points but on the whole not really satisfying. To do that it would have to have gone deeper into what makes the greatest heroes of tragedy , Hamlet, Lear, Macbeth so deeply moving to us.

I will only say that on a personal note when I first read Tragedy in a serious way under the tutelage of the late Elizabeth Buckley of Troy High School I understood that it was not confined to the stage of another time or another world, not confined to kings or princess but was a deep revelation of the human mind and heart in experience as I had intimated it in my own great father's life. He who truly 'bestrode the world like a colossus' in his greatest moments did when he fell fall so deeply and painfully that the human heart could not help but be moved to depths and pains it could not possibly understand or be redeemed from.

A very specific guide on Hypnosis.

This is not the first book I read about hypnosis. I have read some on the material and I haven't really been able to make it work that much. However, this book makes it easier to understand, to practice and to help me use it. I understand now a lot more on how to use it to accomplish the things I want in life. It is also very specific on the terms I use now. I recommend it. I bought this guide on a discounted price.

Mesmerizing!

Mesmerizing! That is how I would describe this book. I like how this book was able to talk about the history of hypnotism. The ancient ways as usual has given me quite a chill. This book also contains some stories on how hypnotism had been used to treat people, especially those who had been in trauma. This book not only discussed about the benefits of hypnotism, but it also mentioned about the bad effect of hypnotism if done incorrectly. The case of Candace Newmaker is an example of this incorrect practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in hypnotism. But for myself I will not try the self-hypnosis even if the book had given the proper procedures. It’s enough for me to read about it.

Interesting but hard to understand in parts

The book was very concise and to the point. I like the beginning where they tell you about the history of hypnotism. It lets you know how it all began and got to where it is today. Also telling you about certain life problems and mental conditions that specific types of hypnotism can help was very interesting and informative. When it got to the part describing how to do self hypnotism and describing NLP I feel that they were too technical in the descriptions of them. If you are a typical lay person the terminology they used could be very confusing. Putting it in simpler terms that anyone can understand would have made it a much better read. All in all it was very interesting and informative.

Excellent book

Bob Lee and Gordon Wheeler have compiled a wonderfully insightful book about shame as it exists in our American culture. With chapters submitted by a number of creative individuals, there are articles (among others on) shame and homosexuality; male-male relationships; social class systems; and chronic illness.
This book has made a significant impact on my work as a therapist and consultant. I would encourage every therapist and consultant to read this book.

A lifelong motoring enthusiast, Julian Parish has lived in both the UK and France, and has driven more than half a million miles throughout Europe and North America. After a career in book and software publishing, he now spends much of his time writing and translating motoring books and articles, many of them devoted to the pleasures of driving on the Continent. He has been a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists in the UK for nearly thirty years, is a member of AFPA, the association of French motoring journalists, and speaks French and German fluently.
