The manual only contains solutions to ODD-numbered problems, which is totally NOT stated on the book title. This misleads buyers. While the manual gives good, detailed solutions to odd problems, harder problems from the book happen to be even. On average, this solution manual is almost useless.

Another Over-Rated Book of JB's...

It seems that many of JB's books have been vastly over-rated on this site, & this definitely seems to be another 1 of those.... I read this book just once & thought that it just wasn't a very likely story at all even if this was just a work of fiction, & that I'd not be interested in reading it ever again....
Try "Marriage at His Convenience" or "The Reluctant Fiancee" if U want a good one by JB!

Another book where the author plays fast and loose with the law

The 'hero' kidnaps the heroine and their son. That is a crime. I am sick and tired of these Harlequin 'heros' doing illegal stuff like this and then getting away with it. Then he blackmails her, another crime. Sorry but I don't find men who have to hold their women captive and then subject them to verbal abuse sexy. In fact I found the hero repulsive and respected her heroines initial decision not to inform him of his sons birth. No sane woman would want a guy like that around her child. The hero always comes in all hang dog in the end and darn if his crazy antics were all because he loved her and completely ignores the real damage that could have been caused. Bad book, bad premise bad hero with a self sufficient heroine that should have simply taken the hero to court and established legal conditions that would have prevented her problems. The bracelet stuff was stupid, if you loved this woman so much why did you say no and dump her when she asked you to marry her?

THIS IS NOT IT! The man (can't call him a hero) is abusive; both verbally (how many times did he call her a bit--?), mentally (he kidnapped her and her child), and physically (how many times did he grab her so hard it was painful?). This is not romance. This book was disturbing.

For this revised edition, the author added 20 problems from master games on which the reader can test his understanding of the principles found in the text.

An Excellent overview for the serious beginner.

What this book gives is a broad picture of what you are trying to achieve when you play chess. It takes you above the region of move by move analysis and sets you the task of viewing the game as a strategic whole. If you can grasp this high level view of the game of chess, you have a better chance of improving your game. This is a book about the thinking behind chess and the strategy element, as opposed to tactics.
Very short, very readable and entertaining, and a useful companion to quite a high level.

A Gem! Buy it! Clear Explanations On Chess Thought Inside

A brilliant little book that is clearly written, extremely useful, and bargain-priced. Do not be misled by the author's use of maxims for chapter titles: he is not dogmatic whatsoever. Znosko-Borovsky's verbal analysis of a chess position, for example, on pages 54-60, regarding visualizing a plan based on the differences (however slight)in each side, and putting that plan into effect is an eye-opener. If you've read Jeremy Silman's How To Reassess Your Chess, you'll recognize the thinking method detailed decades before Silman published. I believe you will not regret time spent with this book.

Good little instructional book.

Don't let the old style and skinniness of the book fool us.

This book is a good instructional one. The author did not provide many examples, but gave the main brief principles and elaborated more with words. His explanation is clear and deep if we pay attention to the details. His 70 plus pages contain as much information as 300 pages in Silman's The Amateur's Mind. His book is to help the intermediate level to improve.

There are many principles still very applicable in the modern chess:

a) Do not believe all that you are told. Examine, verify, use your reason.

b) In war, topography dictates the operations.

c) Do not leave any pieces where it has no range of action...

d) Haste, the great enemy.

All great advises.

However, there are some that the intermediate level has problem with or makes the modern players think "hmm."

a) Avoid mistakes. How?

I recall some GM's comment of the intermediate's move: "When the intermediate moves a piece, he makes a tactical mistake; when he moves a pawn, a positional mistake. Well?

b) Do not modify your plan. What? Any player knows that not all plans work out correctly, while both sides try to interfere with the other's plan. The battle plan has to adjust according to the situation. A rigid plan fails.

And there are some advices conflicting each other. On the blockade of the passed pawn, on page 81, he wrote, "If your opponent should have a passed pawn, your first and most urgent duty is 'mechanically' to stop its advance--blockade it."

If the passed pawn is not mobile (or we have control of the square immediately in front of it) then the blockade is not that urgent (H.H.). He wrote, "Unless you analyze the position, you will achieve nothing" (on page 42) and "Do not play to quickly" (on page 48.)

The advices from this book are still very applicable in this modern time. But the offensive and defensive techniques have advanced significantly, some advices need adaptations.

THROUGH PERSONAL EXAMPLES AND GENERAL OVERVIEWS OF THE CORRUPTION OF THE NEO-COLONIAL AFRICAN STATE, NGUGI HAS WRITTEN A MUST-READ FOR ANY AFRICAN WHO HAS COME INTO CONTACT WITH WESTERN CULTURE, MAY THAT BE THROUGH LANGUAGE, SCHOOLING, OR ONE'S PLACE OF RESIDENCE. UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK, I DID NOT REALIZE HOW PROFOUNDLY THE RACIST NOTIONS OF THE WESTERN WORLD AFFECTED MY THOUGHT PROCESS AND THE WAY THAT I VIEWED THE WORLD AROUND ME; ESPECIALLY THE WAY THAT I VIEWED MYSELF. This book is blowing my mind. Ngugi Wa Thiong'o is like a modern day Frantz Fanon (but an author/teacher/playwright instead of a psychiatrist). Why hasn't anyone told me about this book before? Madame Jeanne Guyon was born in 1648 into a wealthy family south of Paris. At the age of twenty she had a life-changing experience of willingly giving herself to the Lord. From that moment on, she was a changed woman. She set out to know the Lord, to live by His life and to acknowledge God in all circumstances.Guyon suffered persecution throughout her life...from family and the church. She died in 1717.

Sit at HIS Feet

Writing a review for a Madame Guyon book is a bit like submitting a critique of Shakespeare. Her writings are classic. Who hasn't read her? What can I add?

Personally, my moments with Guyon are treasured and vital. Like an aspirin for pain, a dose of Jeanne Guyon brings relief to the hurried, exterior western mindset. Radical in her day, her thoughts continue to challenge the religious. Her mystic writings cut through the fog of our present culture. Her words often pierce by surprise. Her truths are exacting and accurate in this collection of letters. The focus is clear: turn from self to Christ; abandon yourself to God. Trust His love and grace for all spiritual progress.

My only objection to this edition is its subtitle, "Sit at the feet of the greatest woman in church history." Although I might personally agree with that statement, if Madame Guyon isn't rolling over in her grave at that accolade, she has most certainly protested to her Beloved about it. Her key objective in this text, and in all her writings, is to lead others to sit at HIS feet. As she writes in chapter 30: "See God alone. Fix your eyes on Him and never put them on yourself." It is ironic that the publisher would so violate her vision in circulating her material. Having said that, I am grateful to the Seed Sowers for providing the text - and highly recommend it.

Simple and awesome

Madame Guyon used simple short words to speak out deep truth in different people's spiritual life. More than that, she gave appropriate medicine to the person in that situation. The book is awesome. Every piece of advice is precious pure gold. Thank God for this wonderful supply.

I liked this book so much, I bought several for members of my prayer group. We now have discussions on its contents. This is just what I have been looking for. After reading Jeanne Guyon first book on "Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ", I knew I had to read her other writings.

Great book!

This book was great for our 8,7,4 year old who are always comparing everything with each other. They enjoyed the illustrations and we had a good discussion about the message of the book. Two of our children have special needs that require some extra attention and this book helped illustrate we love all our children just the same, and give them what they need.

Touching and heartfelt

It’s not often these days that I am so enamoured with a book that I read it in one sitting and little did I know when I sat in the garden, one sunny Tuesday afternoon, and got up three hours later with a pretty numb backside and a sunburnt nose, that FINDING A VOICE would be that book. Beautifully written, heart-wrenching prose, honest and fragile characters and a touching story makes for one very special read.

Jo is a thirteen year old girl with a lot on her plate. Dealing with a mother who suffers from severe depression whilst living under the self-imposed guilt that reaching out for help will do more harm than good, it is not surprising that she wants to escape. While other girls have friends to confide in, the stigma of mental illness has ensured Jo is left alone every recess. It’s utterly heartbreaking to be inside Jo’s head as she scrambles to keep her and her mother’s lives on track. When Jo is asked to tea by the new girl in school, she thinks finally this year will be different. When it triggers a particularly violent and frightening episode for her mother, the whispers and stares at school are the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Accepting an invitation from the school counsellor to volunteer in the special education block as a means of “escape” brings her into contact with Chris, a teen with cerebral palsy, thought to have severe learning and cognitive abilities. Through their art lessons and lunch hours, Jo and Chris find a peace and friendship and a life neither thought was possible.

Jo’s situation is sadly not unique and this book provides a valuable insight into the life of so many children thrust into the role of carer. It’s a lonely existence and I really felt for Jo, living each day under the threat of the darkest of storms, never knowing if this will be the day she won’t be able to cope, and the bitter-sweet moments when her mother’s lucidity allows Jo to fall back into the welcome position of child instead of parent. It was heartbreaking to watch not only Jo but her mother, trapped by her own mind, living with the guilt that she couldn’t be the parent she desperately wanted to be for her daughter. Even now the emotion conveyed and the love between the two brings tears to my eyes as I write this review.

When Jo meets Chris, the friendship that builds between them reminds us of just how special and unique human beings are at finding connections and ways to communicate despite adversity. I loved how despite Jo’s belief that she was helping Chris how over time his special ability to give unspoken support to her provided a comfort she lacked from others. The breakthrough as they learn to communicate and find each other’s voice is a lesson to us all – a lesson to “Look Up”; to make eye contact and truly listen to each other.

This was such a special book and resonated with me on so many levels. Kim Hood’s easy style of writing allows the emotion to shine through and enables the reader to really connect with the characters. The pacing flowed well and kept me engaged with the story which was so sweet and honest, it made my heart ache for Jo and Chris.

A story about friendship and unwavering hope, FINDING A VOICE is a book that will stay with you long after you’ve finished- touching and tender, it will make you laugh and cry and believe in the beauty of the bonds of humanity. Perfect for fans of Gayle Forman and John Green – Highly recommend.
