Cyril H. Wecht, M.D., J.D., is actively involved as a medical-legal and forensic science consultant, author, and lecturer. Currently coroner of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, he is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology and is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Wecht is a Clinical Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Graduate School of Public Health, an Adjunct Professor at Duquesne University Schools of Law, Pharmacy and Health Services, and a Distinguished Professor at Carlow University. He is a past president of both the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Wecht is the author of more than 500 professional publications and has appeared as a guest on numerous national television and radio talk shows.

John T. Rago, J.D., is Assistant Professor of Law at Duquesne University School of Law and the Director of both The Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law and the Law School’s Post-conviction DNA Project. He teaches criminal law and procedure to law students and graduate courses on wrongful convictions, foundations in American law and constitutional criminal procedure to students in the university’s Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences. Professor Rago also serves as an appointed member to the Innocence Project’s Policy Group of the Cardozo School of Law in New York. He is admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Yggdrasill in a game set in Scandia, the land of modern day Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway. you can take on the roll of anything you can think of that was around at that time. The game is rather simple to pick up, but offers loads of options for play style.

Yggdrasill is a semi-class less game, I say semi, because when you are choosing gifts, which help make your character a bit more interesting, if you want to play either a caster or Berserker, one of your two gifts has to go to Initiate of Odin or Odin's Chosen respectively. Ultimately this doesn't hurt the game at all, but for people coming from other games of Cubicle 7 such as Qin, that needs to be noted. Aside from that the system is very open to both modifying as well as just customizing from the book alone. I especially like the Fate Runes system that helps adds depth to the character. The only thing I feel slightly takes away from this book is that the adventure at the back is pretty railroaded (linear) as written so a GM should read through it first and then make necessary changed to fit with that the group wants. Aside from that minor detail the game is solid and a lot of fun. If you want more in-depth info on this, I suggest looking up reviews via Google or YouTube.

Slickly Produced & Well Written

Even if you weren't going to run this game with the system right 'out of the box' the general ideas are pretty rich and decently detailed. Writing runs from reasonably clear and concise to evocative and the overall print quality of my particular book was fantastic! Maybe not a treasure trove of ideas, but certainly a good start. I bought this with a similarly themed product from another company and the Yggdrasill Core Book stood up well against the competition (which wasn't shabby in its own right).

Excellent book!

This is a great game with solid gameplay rules and filled with an amazing amount of detail.

I would give this game a five but for two reasons.
1) The book feels over priced for its size and the pages are sepia toned but still good looking none-the-less.

2) Your characters live to die and are very mortal.

A good game but not for everybody. Even if you never play the game its filled with excellent source material.

Great formating but look at the price

Yet ANOTHER publisher that SHOULD be ashamed of themselves. This time we have an amazingly good format of a book. It's sweet. Check out the preview. Italics, bold... looks great. BUT look at the price. $86??? For an EBOOK? I'd pay that for a physical book for resale value... but NOT an ebook. who would? Consider that the physical hardback is selling for less: $81.

What is wrong with this publisher? Protest.

Thank God Amazon allowed a refund on my mistaken purchase of the product.

Still great, but I preferred the 14th edition

As a teacher for direct-entry midwives in the U.S., I have used Myles' Textbooks for years. I have recently finished reading this edition which is very similar to the 14th edition. The editors are the same and most of the material is the same.

The book still has a very welcome emphasis on "Evidenced Based Practice", which was introduced with the 14th edition. It is still a wonderfully comprehensive textbook.

The part I especially don't like in this edition is the drift toward the medical model of childbirth presented in the chapter on prolonged pregnancy and disorders of uterine action. Putting time limits on labor may be necessary for meeting new protocols in Britian, but seeing this trend reminds one of the reasons many in the U.S. opt for home birth instead of hospital birth. It just saddens me to see this change.

In the 14th edition there was a chapter on "Family Planning" and in the 15th edition the chapter has changed to "Contraception and Sexual Health". The tone of the chapter has changed to reflect the title. The author seems to bemoan the fact that few women in the U.K. use the intrauterine device, while stating that it is not so unpopular elsewhere, as in China, where 60 million women use them. In China women are FORCED to use interuterine devices!

The chapter "Woman-centred, midwife friendly care: principles, patterns and culture of practice" seems to have changed more to emphasize the midwife friendly part. There was a gem in the 14th edition that didn't make it to the 15th:

"The aims of midwifery are far wider than physical health of mother and baby. They include the following:

* to help the mother and her family make the transition to parenthood in the best way possible; that is, to emerge from childbirth physically and emotionally intact, with the relationships within the family, particularly the attachment between the mother and baby and parents, as strong as possible, and to have the confidence, knowledge and commitment to care for her child until adulthood.

* to support and protect physiological processes and healthy outcomes

* to provide comfort and alleviate the distressing symptoms of pregnancy, labour and birth and the postpartum period."

However, there are still some gems in this revised chapter such as: "When practicing in less than ideal situations it is important to do the best you can, while recognizing that there are some factors out of your control and accepting that your contribution is limited."

All in all Myles is still a great textbook and I'm still using it to train direct entry midwives in the States.

This book should be used in the US and not Varney's

This is the best midwife book ever. It far surpasses the USA textbook "Varney's Midwifery" which is a cumbersome monster. This book is easier to read, easier to understand and better organized for information than Varneys. Plus, it is cheaper and it is available on Kindle!

About the Author

Edward Craig is Knightsbridge Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge University, where he is also a Fellow of Churchill College. He has held visiting appointments at the Universities of Hamburg and Heidelberg, and the University of Melbourne. His publications include The Mind of God and the Works of Man (OUP, 1987), Knowledge and the State of Nature (OUP, 1990), and he is general editor of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

An unusual introduction to philosophy

Introductory philosophical texts tend to adopt one of two possible approaches: Either they give a chronological account of famous thinkers and schools, or they examine a set of topics - ethics, free will, nature of mind, etc. Craig opts for something different and rather interesting. The first three chapters are intended to be read in tandem with the works they summarize, namely Plato's "Crito", Hume's "On Miracles" and the Buddhist "King Milanda's Chariot". How many readers will actually do that is doubtful but it is an interesting idea that introduces the reader to three very different areas of philosophy.

We then, somewhat more traditionally, have summary introductions to some philosophical themes and 'isms'. Next, Craig presents reviews of a very personal selection of philosophical classics. 'Idiosyncratic' may be a better word than 'personal' as it includes Darwin's "The Origin of Species" which would not normally feature in such a list.

Finally, we have a description of philosophy as a discipline, asking what purposes and interests it serves.

There's a lot of good things to say about this little book. It is a well-written, lively and authoritative introduction. Craig references the Hindu tradition as well as the Western and gives plenty of encouragement and advice for further study.

Philosophy educates us about the questions

Craig’s object is to briefly explain the project of philosophy and examine a few of the problems to which philosophy has addressed itself. Craig's definition of philosophy is delivered in a kind of parable. Imagine when human beings became conscious that sensory data could be interpreted through concrete symbols and ideas. An animal track means an animal has passed, which might be pursued as prey, or avoided. Human beings perceived and visualized events by indirect evidence and ideas, and then considered how human beings could act to influence events. Human beings became aware of forces of nature and events beyond human control. Human beings investigated nature, but encountered mysteries, and developed a sense of the supernatural. The project of understanding and explaining nature is science, and the project of recovering from the shock of mystery is philosophy.

Craig argues that philosophy has progessed but that progress in the discourse of ideas is much slower than progress in science. The answers aren’t always verifiable and clearly true, and the ideas don’t quickly gain traction in a diverse culture. Historians of science can trace the rise and fall of theories and paradigms fairly clearly. Bad theories are generally discounted except by kooks. Philosophical ideas can be traced too, but the problems tend to persist. His approach is to examine a few key problems by looking at how a select group of philosophical texts raised certain issues: Plato’s "Crito" on the ethical and political question of why Socrates, given the chance to escape, allowed the Athenian state to execute him; Hume’s "On Miracles" on evidence and reality; the unknown Buddhist writer of "King Milenda’s Chariot" on an idea of the self. From there, Craig sketches some of the main themes of philosophy: ethical consequentialism, integrity, political authority, evidence, rationality, and so forth. He also sketches the main groupings of "-ism" ideas: dualism, materialism, idealism, empiricism, rationalism, skepticism, relativism. After that he looks at a few interesting works, discussing Descartes’s "Discourse on Method", Hegel’s Introduction to the "Philosophy of History", Darwin, and also Nietzsche’s "On the Genealogy of Morals". The fact that Craig includes Darwin is interesting. Darwin wasn’t a philosopher, but he had interesting and influential ideas which many others have used and abused.

All in all, this VSI is nicely written, in a good clean style with convincing arguments and good ideas. Craig’s approach to philosophy goes beyond the narrow concerns of modern-day professional philosophers who are mainly occupied, with many exceptions of course, in dealing with logic and language. He doesn’t claim that philosophy can explain everything. Rather, philosophy is a discipline of inquiry and discourse which tends to take apart speculative systems and humble people who are too wrapped up in their own beliefs about what's good and true.

Useful in the extreme.

A wonderful, lucid, entertaining and informative guide. Craig takes the reader step-by-step through some of the principal works of ancient and modern philosophy, and provides us with an essential guide to the somewhat daunting task of deciphering and understanding a range of compelling thinkers and their works. With an engaging, friendly writing style (and an excellent bibliography to encourage us to continue our journey), this is an indispensable little volume.
