A graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, she is best known for her vintage-style imagery often associated with her elaborate weddings and high-production engagement sessions. Her wedding and contemporary lifestyle images can also be found in stock libraries, fine art galleries, and advertising campaigns for hotels, pharmaceutical companies, and record labels in the U.S. and Europe. Award-winning and published in numerous magazines and websites, Etienne also contributes to key industry publications such as Bride World, Rangefinder, AfterCapture, The Times Journal of Photography, PDN, Petersen’s Photographic Magazine, Photoserve.com, Kodak.com, and Photobiz.com. She currently serves on Kodak’s advisory board and has her own consulting business and workshop company called Dream Team Photo Workshops. She lives in Los Angeles, California.

Love this book

Elizabeth Etienne has good, sound practical knowledge of the photography business, primarily for portrait and wedding work in this book. I thorougly enjoyed her examples and step by step warm personable writing style that makes anyone feel they can do this. After a couple more classes I hope to sign up for her coaching as well... This is an excellent book.

This book explains EVERY thing you need to know about how to start up your own photography business. From writing ideas down, to purchasing items for your photo studio, to office equipment, financial information, and where to start. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is starting out. It helped me get a jumpstart on things I didn't even know and I know it will definitely benefit me. Getting started right now to earn that income and do my dream job!! I've been waiting for this for a long time and now I found the guide to help me!!! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!

Thoroughly Ready

After being asked to shoot more and more photo jobs through word of mouth over the past two years and having people ask me to "go live" with my photography business, I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about the business of photography. This book was a great read that has inspired me to dust off my film camera from 18 years ago and shoot both film and digital. I love how thorough EE is and how she freely shared her mistakes in hopes that her readers will avoid some of, if not all of the pitfalls of being a "new" business owner in photography. I continue to book more photos jobs and am on my way to "going live". Can't believe it got this book for $.99 on Kindle. I feel like I need to buy the hardcopy as this book is a good reference tool with all of the contracts examples. Next up, EE's Engagement Photography book. I skimmed it and it too has more business information along with excellent photography information. Got this on on hard copy.

Hearing Aid Dispensing Training Manual

I've taken training courses and had books from those courses in the past. I was getting close to taking a state exam and needed additional info. I purchased hearing aid dispensing training manual and learned more about the hands on aspect of dispensing in one weekend than anything else that I've had through courses or purchased elsewhere. (I've been reading and studying those books for over a year). The knowledge and experience that is presented in this text is exceptional. If you are someone that is trying to pass a state required practical examination to become a licensed dispenser, this read is worth your time and it's very clear and easy to follow. Lastly, this Manual covered more on masking than anything else I've seen or come across anywhere else. There is a whole chapter dedicated to masking which is a big section on the licensing exam that I took. Hands down worth every penny!

Hearing Aid Training

I've trained with two Audiologist and purchased a few books for my Hearing Instrument License and was struggling with masking but this book opened my eyes and was very helpful and explained step by step in basic terminology. Another positive are the examples from patients complaining and to fitting issues that I seen on my written exam. I'm a very hands on type of learner and I benefitted a lot on the Practical training section/script. I highly recommend this book!!!

Excellent Material

I purchased this book while studying for my Hearing Instrument License. I worked out of a couple other books also, but this one was much easier to understand and relate to. There were also little tricks that made me stand out in a positive way compared to others that were also testing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get licensed and needing a more step-by-step approach to having a successful test.

Good stories, truly enlightening, but needs some editing

I read "I Walked to Zion" with a lot of enthusiasm. The book contains many accounts written by young people in their own words. The reader gains a good understanding of what the trek from Illinois to Utah must have been like for children and young adults. Of course youth like to keep their accounts short so most details are missing. Especially missing are the hardships of the menfolk who did most of the physical labor of the trek.

Still the reader comes away with an appreciation for the difficulties of the children, and their victories as well. Many of these young folk carried siblings on their backs, cared for the cattle, walked in snow until they were numb, and some of them died of cholera, exposure and starvation.

As a Mormon living in modern times, it brought home to me a stark recognition of what my ancestors endured just to be with the saints who believed as they did. Living one's religion in peace was a luxury not afforded to the early saints, and this book takes a hard look at how that affected the youth of the church. Uprooted from their homes in England, Sweden, and other European countries, these children suffered weeks in the dark holds of ships. They emerged in America only to have to travel across its plains, a trek of nearly 1,200 miles, on foot in fair and foul weather. Many of them lost their parents, and gave up everything they had to be with the saints in Zion. I shall always be grateful for their sacrifices.

If there is one complaint I had with the book it is that it is very chopped-up. After each individual's story, there is a list of references. While I agree that references are critical, they should have been placed at the back of each book, with an indication of which stories drew from them. In this way, the book would have better continuity.

Still, I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone.

Doesn't Really Tell You What the Top 2% Does - Too Generic

This book has an interesting premise. I purchased the book on the recommendation of the Heath brothers, who wrote the book “Made to Stick",

Unfortunately, the Alpha Project Managers book is not very strong and probably not worth buying. I have a degree in Industrial Engineering and purchased many project management books over past 20 years since it's related to my field.

This book is really a survey of 800 project managers with a summary of responses. It should be a PDF or presentation document. It is stretched into a complete book. The insights are very lacking and generic.

There is no overarching strategy. There's no overarching system, There's no overarching approach that could take you from an average project manager to an elite one. There's no focus on the nuances that separates the best managers. (However, they do interview the top 2% of managers)

So this book really doesn't help you improve as a project manager. It's just summarizing a lot of survey results from top project managers but it's not delineating the differences in a way that's practical. I would give this book 2 stars out of 5 because it doesn't really need to be a book. It should be a presentation.

A Useful Guide to PM Excellence

After using his super PMP study guide some time back, I picked up Andy Crowe's `Alpha Project Managers,' published in 2006.

This has to be one of the most under produced books I've ever seen. Crowe essentially self-published on his own Velociteach label. It shows. The graphics are third rate and the cover is pretty bad.

But no matter. The information inside is fascinating. Crowe surveyed over 3,000 project managers and their co-workers/supervisors in order to identify the "top 2%" of project managers ("alpha project managers"). He tried to identify PMs who were consistently rated as excellent by the people they worked with and their customers. Once he found them, he zeroed in on their work habits and PM techniques.

Some of the interesting findings:

# Alphas respond to fewer emails/day and spend less time in meetings than non-alphas, yet people rated them as being more responsive than non-alphas.
# Alphas establish explicit communication expectations, and adhere to them stringently.
# Alphas sent much shorter communications than their non-alpha peers.
# Alphas spent twice as much time in the planning phase of their projects than did non-alphas.
# Alphas used informal networks to get things done much more often than non-alphas (who stuck to formal channels).
# Alphas were much more aware or how their bosses were being measured (ROI, etc.) than non-alphas.

Each of these points (and others) are supported with some useful anecdotes from the PMs themselves. Crowe does a good job trying to help PMs understand these habits and apply them to their own work. This is a text which deserves wider recognition and higher quality production in a second edition.

Actual and perceived differences in project management behavior and practices

The subtitle for this work would probably be more aptly worded "What the Top 2% DO that Everyone Else Does Not". However, at the same time, the content of this book should not be expected to provide concrete actionable items to address the individuals targeted in the dedication, worded by the author thusly: "To any project manager who has ever lain awake at night and wondered if there were not a better way". The conciseness that Andy Crowe provides here is commendable, but the less than 200 pages of content provided in the compact format of this book does not leave room for much more beyond a presentation of the project manager study he conducted. Unlike the comments of some other readers, however, this reviewer thinks that even though this study was not exactly scientific, there is much to be gained here even if such knowledge is solely limited to the fact that the author actually conducted formal research to determine what helps positively differentiate the top portion of project managers. What makes this study of particular interest is that information on effective project management is obtained not just from project managers, but from customers, team members, and senior management as well, providing a type of 360-degree peer review, because as the author explains, project managers frequently do not have accurate images of themselves as professionals. A total of 860 project managers were included in this study that provided 4,398 such stakeholders. This book discusses 8 major areas where top performers stand apart: attitude and belief, focus and prioritization, communication, approach, relationships and conflict, alignment, issue management, and leadership. In the opinion of this reviewer, the conclusions of this study that highlight real and perceived differences between Alpha project managers and the other 98% of the project manager pool can serve as yet another aid along the path of personal continuous improvement. Within the closing pages of this book, the author remarks that "it is almost universally true that small things can make a big difference. The gap between the Alphas and the other 98% of the population may be quite large on some levels; however, most of this is caused by very subtle behaviors and differences. Both groups show up for work, plan their projects, manage their teams, deliver the results, and gain the customer's acceptance. In most regards, what they have in common is much greater than what separates them". Also, "when an entire population possesses highly similar characteristics, any advantage, however small, can have very significant implications. Small differences in behavior and practices can account for large outcomes, both actual and perceived".

Give this excellent book a chance!

To think that I almost didn't read this book when I saw that it only received a little more than 2 stars! When I actually read the bad reviews, I discovered that one was due to pricing and the others felt there was too much British terminology. I admit it was somewhat noticeable at first but once things got going, I hardly noticed it.

Jess, our protagonist, seemed a little bit abrasive but she grew on me and I came to admire the way she became quite a force to be reckoned with. Her love for Louis knew no bounds and she became unstoppable.

Once I really got going, I could hardly stand to put the book down. Please don't let the negative reviews and small number of stars stop you from buying this book. I almost did, and I'm so glad that I didn't.

Awesome start stupid finish

This book had me hooked for the first 50 or so pages....after that anyone can figure out the twist. The characters were not well developed, and I've never heard of a character to be asleep so much in a book while containing vital information. I finished the book just to be sure I was right about who took the kid, and then was only left wondering...wouldn't it have made more sense to....well I won't spoil it but you will probably ask yourself the as!e question after you finish reading it.

Absolutely essential for any college student

I wish someone had given me this book when I was a junior in college. I heard about it and bought it for myself in July after finishing up my master's degree in May. It is chock-full of ideas of alternative career paths (ones that do not involve cubicles) or temporary 'delays'...it also has ideas on how to fund your travels and dreams. It is nearly a one-stop shop for all possible avenues and adventures. Be prepared to mark up your book and dog-ear the pages with the ideas that are most appealing to you. It's written in a great style that makes it a surprisingly quick read - and one that you don't want to put down!

You have time to dream and experience - use it wisely!

I am certainly not the target audience for this book. A few of my children would be among those for whom the book was written. That being said, I was in my twenties once and have some idea of the decades that come afterward.

The notion of the book is that a person has the whole world open to them in their twenties and need not - should not - simply rush into the mundane world of work and simply accept the easy and obvious job waiting for them when they get out of college. When you are in your early twenties you have time to take risks and even start over. The cubicle will always be there. An opportunity to visit exotic locales or take an internship to explore a fascinating career will not. Eventually, you have to get serious about life. For most people marriage comes and then children and the ability to just take off and explore something simply for the experience becomes something in your past.

This is NOT a book about slacking. It is a book about releasing the energy of your youth and contains all kinds of helpful information that will help you explore your dreams. I think it will even help people develop dreams. Why not say, "why the heck not!" and go do something cool?

I know from firsthand experience that simply living abroad for a couple of years is a terrific educational experience. It broadens your view of the world and enables you to see your previous life as an outsider. Most helpful in relating to others as you get older.

All this encouraging support being said, I do have to add this bit of caution. If you want to pursue an aggressive career to the "top", you have to remember that you are competing with everyone in your age cohort whether you know them or not. The most talented are likely using these years to move forward with great focus and determination. The competitive problem will only become apparent later when you have fallen out of serious competition. While you were building a rich experience base, they were building a resume that can get attention. So, while you dream and experience, try to use these experiences to move forward as well.

Comparative review of 3 embryology textbooks

I needed to build an embryology reference library for my own writing purposes, and bought three books at once from Amazon.com: Sadler, Moore & Persaud (The Developing Human, ISBN 0-7216-6974-3), and Larsen (Essentials of Human Embryology, ISBN 0-443-07514-X). Of the three, I keep gravitating toward Sadler as the most useful.
Although the other two are beneficial for more detailed accounts, Sadler gives the quickest and clearest grasp of the essential points. Sadler and Larsen write with more lucid prose and have a clearer conceptual flow than Moore & Persaud, but Sadler has the advantage of brevity for readers who do not need the minutiae.
Sadler also outshines the other two books in the clarity and color schemes of the line art (although not in number of illustrations). The art and photography in this book make the complex 3-dimensional changes of embryology as easy to visualize as one could hope. I find the pink and yellow color scheme in much of Moore & Persaud's line art, and the pink cast of many of the fetal photographs, unappealing.
Larsen is the only one of these books with a glossary. Sadler and Moore are the only ones with clinical case studies to test the reader's insight and problem-solving ability; both offer an appendix of solutions to the clinical problems. All three books have clinical application sidebars or chapter sections. The clinical applications in Moore are especially numerous, perhaps even to the point of distraction as they sometimes overshadow the main text. All three books have bibliographies for further reading on each chapter, with the larger Larsen and Moore books offering somewhat more references than Sadler.
If one does not need to get very deeply into embryology but needs an efficient overview of essential points, I recommend the compact and handy Sadler book above the others. For more depth, but with comparably clear writing, I recommend Larsen. Moore and Persaud, in my impression, is the least clearly written and least well illustrated, but the richest in clinical content.

I first bought Moore & Persaud's Embryology for the colorful pictures and the easy-to-read font but I soon realised that although the illustrations were good for those of us that depend on a pictorial memory, the text that accompanied it didn't completely explain some of the more complicated concepts and a few of the pictures are also apparently incorrect. I started falling back when everyone with Larsen seemed to love Embryo and I hated it 4 weeks into session. I then got myself a Larsen but soon realised that it too wasn't the book for me (although I know many that swear by it). Larsen, I found was very repetitive and I'd often find myself reading a near-identical paragraph two pages on from one I'd just read. I also found that Larsen tends to deviate from a topic through his paragraphs and talks about other things that would happen at that particular stage of development (which is good in some cases but gets annoying when you'd like to take one structure and follow it through from the beginning to the end without being confused by OTHER things that are happening at the same time) I then stumbled across Langman in the histology lab when I saw the lab assistant using it. Since I found myself once again confused with Embryo, I bought a Langman while on holiday in Sri Lanka for half the price and never looked back. Langman clearly compartmentalizes the topics and minimizes deviating onto other structures while describing the development one concerned unless it is directly relevant. I found it much clearer and easier to understand. Unlike the clutter of images that Larsen would leave in my head, Langman left a smooth chain of thought which was easy to recall. I also found that Langman's summaries at the end of each chapter (although not being as comprehensive as Larsen's) were still pretty good. It also had some information that was not in either Larsen or Moore. But above all, it takes the biscuit for its simple yet awesome three-dimensional CG diagrams, that are unbeatable for those of us who are poor at 3D visualization (ATARI over PS2 anyday!!). The diagrams are perfect for a comprehensive picture of the 7 pages of text that I'd have to sift through if I read Larsen. It also has really good clinical correlations and photographs of numerous congenital diseases and abnormalities. Overall, I'd reccomend this book as my first choice for an embryo text book. It took me nearly 3 sessions to find out the hard way; don't make the same mistake I did. Anyone wanna buy my Moore's? Cheers...
