Paying for the name...

First off I have to say, I did think they did a great job at covering several areas. This guide went over many things I was intending to work on in a very easy to follow manner. My main concern, however, is that after purchasing and comparing both Haynes and Chilton manuals for the same car, I believe I paid more for the name Chilton.

The guides are nearly identical (If someone says one is "more in-depth" they are full of it), in fact both guides can turn the page to similar numbers and the same information will be there. The difference was again, in price, about $5 more for the Chilton guide.

Overall, I think I would recommend Haynes over this one as it even includes a spark plug quick reference (the only real difference between the two) whereas the Chilton, does not.

Really good tool if you are an unexperience guy with cars and mechanics, It was really helpfull with some maintenance about the car, like the time-belt, sparks (type), etc, I recommend this Repair manual for all the Corolla 05 owners

I found the best reference book for DIY repairs on my 2006 Toyota Corolla 1.8G. This book can only be found in Amazon.com and cannot be sourced locally in the Philippines. Previously, my DIY was Destroy -It -Yourself, but now with this book ,I find great joy in Do-It- Yourself repairs and maintenance in a somehow professional way. Thank you AMAZON.

This book has much in common with Ms. Lawson's later work, The Good Wife's Guide to Taking Charge. Yet each has a few unique anecdotes and emphases. The way to get full value and enjoyment is easy---buy and read them both!

In this genre, Rebecca Lawson stands high above her peers by promoting female dominance only in MARRIAGE, as a way to enrich the home and love lives of wife and husband both. Why hope for this in any old "relationship," absent prior vows to stick with it for life, through better and worse, sickness and health? Some books on femdom suggest horrid notions that need not be mentioned here. Contrary to that, Ms. Lawson's writing is wholesome and virtuous, rich in content yet brief, witty, tantalizing in places, and fun to read---just about every page!

In particular, I recommend this book and Good Wife's Guide, both, to middle-age and senior couples who have not considered femdom in their marriages or have been repelled from it by unworthy books.

Given that marital femdom is an estimable way of life, it may as well become a worthy literary genre. Here Ms. Lawson is a leading pioneer in fantasy fiction as well. To me, her stories fall short of expectations from the superior how-to guides. Yet marital-femdom fiction is an acquired taste. For those who enjoy or wish to sample it, shop at her Amazon page!

This is an excellent introductory/how-to book for any couples interested in a Female led relationship (FLR). Having been in one for many years, I still gained some new insights from this book. Obviously this lifestyle is not for everyone, but if you have ever had a interest, then you and your SO should get this book and give it a try - you might find that it is for you!

Most Hindu youngsters who grow up in the Western hemisphere undergo a gradual attrition of knowledge regarding their own hoary customs and traditions. Ms. Shubha Subbarao has done an outstanding job in fulfilling a very important need of the South Indian Hindu diaspora in English speaking countries by writing this book. Her book very adequately answers any, and all, questions one may have regarding Hindu wedding ceremonies and the significance of various rituals and traditions associated with it.
This book is very well written. It is also full of beautiful illustrations taken from, several different, real life Hindu wedding ceremonies. Ms Subbarao's book is a must read for couples who are on the threshold of getting married but do not know much about their own traditions & customs. It also makes a great gift item for engagement ceremonies.

Thorough, clear information for a non-Hindu

When I picked up this book I had no knowledge of the traditions and symbolism of Hindu weddings. The author explains each part of the preparations and actual wedding in an easy-to-understand way which uncomplicates a fairly complicated social event. As a Western Christian I especially enjoyed the commonalities between Hinduism and other religions. If I were planning a Hindu wedding in America I would especially appreciate Shubha's advice on where to buy food and wedding articles and the use of the Internet to help make the planning easier.

It's a great book to guide you in your starting path in Buddhism. The writing style is simple and easy to understand with straight forward examples and analogies. However, the format in which it's uploaded doesn't allow you to increase the font size neither on my Kindle.

Well-balanced, well-written

The book is adapted from the research Crosby did for the Vatican when it investigated Casey for sainthood. (He's now "venerable.") As such, it's thoroughly researched and footnoted, with none of the hagiographic sense of many saint-biographies. The style is balanced, almost academic but with none of the dryness. In fact, Casey's humanity comes across foremost, along with compassion for him and those to whom he ministered. The text is very readable. Although there are hundreds of footnotes, most of them are citations and not clarifications (meaning you don't have to keep flipping to the back of the book for the full story.)

Crosby does not hesitate to discuss some of Casey's shortcomings, giving a well-rounded treatment to the man as a human being who lived within his culture and his time.

The best part, for me, was how Crosby chronicled some of the changes made in Casey's spirituality over time. Too often we read about saints as if they were fully-formed by age twelve (unless they had a cataclysmic conversion experience) but Crosby notes at times that a certain trait was just in its beginning stages, or that such-and-such was the first notes of what would become one of the hallmarks of Casey's later ministry. This documentation of his spiritual progress should be a comfort for all of us saints-in-training who know we have a long way to travel.

This book is about a way of life of gratitude, and about being open to God's will. It is an easy read, and you can't put it down. I am buying a copy for a friend who just took the bar exam.

Time enhances the purposes of this book

This review is of the basic SPENCERIAN PENMANSHIP book, theory not practice (i.e., nobody writes in this book). Time has enhanced the many reasons one might wish to own it, particularly: (1) self-teaching; (2) home-schooling; and even (3) Americana/nostalgia. By today's decaying standards the instruction in it is unyielding, even severe, especially as to posture and flourish; yet the fact that the contents are well over a hundred years old gives it a certain nostalgic, even somewhat campy, cachet. It's also surprisingly cheap! If used as instructed, it will work, and will provide a hand that's a little more elaborate than the revered Palmer Method, verging on copperplate calligraphy. While a "dip pen" is no longer required, for best results use a fountain pen with a little bit of "give" in the tip. It is best used in conjunction with the workbooks: Spencerian Copybooks 1-5, Set, without Theory Book (Spencerian Penmanship), sold and reviewed separately. Curiously, it is possible to buy this book and the five copybooks as one item, but as of now that costs a good deal more.

A nostalgic andsomewhat bizarre visit to the not-so-distant past.

Platt Rogers Spencer, the developer of the Spencerian method of penmanship in 1840, published this short book about the "theory of proper penmanship" in 1870, along with five Copybooks, making his teaching method the gold standard for handwriting instruction in the late 19th Century.

It is almost unimaginable for us in the 21st Century, but there was a time not that very long ago when there were no computers, no typewriters, and all banking and bookkeeping records were done by hand. Poor handwriting could be disastrous: a misplaced space in a will could mean that instead of receiving "tobacco, two hogsheads" (loosely 2,000 pounds of leaf tobacco, and quite valuable), the nephew of a deceased Southern gentleman might receive "tobacco, two hogs heads", which might be a single pouch of tobacco and two cheeses made with the heads of pigs (far less than valuable). Handwriting was important.

Under Spencer, it was also quite regimented. The theory book describes how writing classes for boys and young men should be implemented (women couldn't work as bank clerks or secretaries yet). From the beginning, the class was as regimented as Marine Corps boot camp. While there are four positions "allowed" for sitting at the desk-- Left-side, Front, Right-oblique, and Right-side-- the author insists that the class should all maintain the same, uniform position (note: there's no more allowance for left-handers than for women, although at least left-handers could learn to write with the non-dominant hand!). Everyone was told to sit the same way, "easily upright, and keep the shoulders square", to avoid becoming "hollow-chested or round-shouldered". Then, on the instructor's commands, they would "open copybooks", "open inkwells", and "dip pens", all in synchronization.

Individual letters were broken down into their components-- students were taught to respond to questions such as "What do you call an angle of 7 degrees greater than 45 degrees?", and had to be able to be able to identify multiple points and angles of a circular diagram, with a special emphasis on "What is the slant of 52 degrees in the Spencerian writing called? The Main Slant. Why is it so called? Because it is the slant given to most of the main or downward strokes."

It was also too complex to last. In 1894, Austin Palmer published his "Palmer's Guide to Business Writing", which was a much simplified variation on the laborious and slow (though beautiful) Spencerian method. It supplanted Spencer's completely in short order, and was taught in American schools not only as handwriting but as a means of instilling discipline in young minds. It required too much manual dexterity for young children, though, so in the 1950s children began learning to use manuscript (block) letters in first grade and to write connected letters using the Zaner-Bloser method in third and fourth grade (usually just referred to as "print" and "cursive"). Zaner-Bloser was yet another simplification of the Spencerian method, and users of the one can usually read the other without difficulty.

And then along came computers. Now, many schools no longer teach handwriting beyond the manuscript-style printing kids learn in first grade and from Sesame Street-- why bother, when no one writes by hand anymore?

The Spencerian Penmanship Theory Book is a glimpse at an earlier world, and a proof that not all progress is completely positive. Handwriting could once be far more beautiful than a text on the smartphone's screen.

Program works!

I got three sets of this. While the style is a little frilly, it certainly takes the student through each step in a logical way. My kids have done very well with it and have even gotten several compliments on their handwriting.
