In the process, we will look at the internals of TCP, UDP, and TLS protocols, and how to optimize our applications and infrastructure for each one. Then we'll take a deep dive into how the wireless and mobile networks work under the hood--this radio thing, it's very different--and discuss its implications for how we design and architect our applications. Finally, we will dissect how the HTTP protocol works under the hood and investigate the many new and exciting networking capabilities in the browser:

Optimze You Site's Network Performance

If you want to build great websites then you need to know how the "web" works. Changing your web app to reduce the number of HTTP requests from 112 to 36 makes it faster. Knowing how to re-use TCP connections reduces the load on the client and the server. Finding out why mobile pages take so long to load, and how to fix that, changes the way people use your site.

High Performance Browser Networking covers all the areas of networking that today's web developer needs to understand. It's great to find all of this in one book. The other nice thing is the way Ilya has laid it out. After presenting the basics of network characteristics and TCP/IP, he goes on to cover other major topics including wifi, mobile, HTTP, and performance. Then he presents newer technologies like WebSockets, WebRTC, and HTTP/2.0. These chapters stand on their own so readers can jump to the chapter that is most relevant to what they need to know now.

Ilya is able to present these complex topics in ways that are easy to understand, and build on those explanations to reveal performance optimizations that make a difference but many websites don't know about. The thing I appreciate the most is how Ilya translates these detailed technical specifications into applicable best practices for building websites. This isn't an academic exercise. Ilya provides the code samples, configuration instructions, and tools you'll need to optimize your website's network performance.

Comprehensive and Accurate

Google engineer Ilya Grigorik has written an amazingly comprehensive and accurate treatise on the performance implications of every significant aspect of browser networking. From basic HTTP all the way to the latest developing standards (SPDY/HTTP2/WebRTC) this book walks you through how the technologies work and the performance impact of each of the features described. The sections on how mobile networks (e.g. 3G/4G) operate contained accessible but incredibly detailed explorations of the architecture of these environments and the implications for performance and battery life.

It's a testament to this book that if you read it in its entirety, you will be one of the most knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to browser networking.

I was a networking program manager on the Internet Explorer team at Microsoft for 8 years, and I nevertheless learned a ton from this book. Best of all, unlike many books I read about complicated topics, this book gets all of the details right-- it was written by an expert in the topic, not someone looking to make a buck.

I really enjoyed this book. Bland shed light on many issues for me, including non-parametric statistics and number needed to treat - there's more going on there mathematically than meets the eye.

Fair balance of conceptual explanations vs. mathematical rigor

Till date I have not found a single best book for applications of statistics and probability to healthcare, but this book is probably the closest. A majority of books on "biostatistics" shy away from mathematics and will focus only on preliminary concepts. Also, I have noticed that many of them have gaps in the presented information and do not build up the subject in a logical order.
Prof. Martin Bland is a recognized authority in the field. He has explained the concepts extremely clearly using real world examples. This book does a very good job at covering nearly the entire spectrum of statistical method used in medical research with emphasis particularly on core things. In the appendices that follow (for example: in the chapter on regression) he has also discussed the mathematical basis for the presented material in a little bit more detail for the interested reader (continuing the same example: the least squares technique).
I guess there is no universal optimal point for conceptual detail vs. mathematical rigor, and I would have personally liked to see more details about different distributions, their CDFs, moment functions, and so on. I believe that the book should assume at least high school level in mathematics i.e. logarithms, calculus, differential equations in one variable, and elementary real analysis. However, this remains a lacuna of the book, in my personal opinion which will not be shared by others. Secondly, in the chapters on Bayesian methods and sample size, again I have felt that the author was torn between the need for comprehensive coverage vs. detail. Though I would have voted for a little bit more detail, I can't argue with issues of having a reasonable size and target audience of the book.
Overall, perhaps one of the best books in the field, thought I could have done with some more mathematical rigor.

About the Author
Richmal Crompton was born in Lancashire in 1890. The first story about William Brown appeared in Home magazine in 1919, and the first collection of William stories was published in book form three years later. In all, thirty-eight William books were published, the last one in 1970, after Richmal Crompton's death.

Hilarious - made me laugh out loud several times, which I otherwise never do.

I read the William books as a young child. They were red hardback books that I'd inherited from my older siblings. However, we didn't have this particular book, so I've now read it for the first time.

William is the sort of boy who, if he were a real boy, and existed in this day and age, would probably be sent to an institution, or at the very least be heavily sedated with Ritalin, or something even worse.

Apart from William, the Brown family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Brown and William's older siblings, Robert and Ethel.

Mrs. Brown is resigned and patient as regards William's escapades, while Mr. Brown mostly contents himself with exclaiming “He's mad, mad, I say!”

William's exploits are actually more than minor misdemeanours and, instead of mildly putting up with them, it might have been more fitting had the parents set some firm limits. But then of course the book wouldn't have been so funny.

This book was published in 1922 (I read the books for the first time in the 50s), and it contains quite a few old-fashioned and thus unfamiliar words and expressions. It is eloquently written; the author doesn't talk down to the reader, and puts to good use her rich, extensive vocabulary.

One linguistic feature that puzzles me is that, while the rest of the family talk in an absolutely refined and educated manner, William, though gifted with amazing powers of persuasion and articulation, expresses himself in a distinctly ungrammatical and “common” way, which in fact more resembles the speech of their servants, (William's family is middle-class, and they were endowed with both a Cook and a housemaid, as far as I recall, and perhaps more servants.)

In this book, William wanders into a nearby mansion and finds himself mistaken for a servant boy, “the new Boots” (whatever that is), and tries his hand at this, until it all ends tumultuously. In a later chapter his Great-Aunt Emily comes to visit; her only occupations are eating and sleeping, and when she sleeps she snores in an impressive and entertaining manner. The ever resourceful William avails himself of the opportunity to augment his pocket money by inviting the village children to come to witness/listen to this fascinating performance, and soon they're all lining up and paying all they've got to witness the show. Subsequently, Great-Aunt Emily cuts short her stay, which had been threatening to become exceedingly long-lasting, and Mr. Brown, who was not enamoured of her, rewards William with half-a-crown. (And I recall a time when half-a-crown was quite a large sum!).

The book contains innumerable further hilarious episodes, including one in which Mrs. Brown was so irresponsible as to entrust William with looking after a toddler for the afternoon, though Robert was shocked at her na�ve trust in her younger son.

I'm not a person that generally laughs aloud when watching a funny film or reading a funny book, but found myself doing so several times when reading this book. Since I've heard that laughing is extremely good for one, maybe I should read or re-read all the William books! I highly recommend them, including this one, to all.

Falls short. Pun intended.

Alex is a god, but this book is boring af after the first couple of chapters. He just doesn't have much interesting to say after he tries his best to describe his motivations and thought process. Also, most of what is detailed in the book has been repeated verbatim in the short videos produced by Sender, The North Face and Vice Sports. Certainly watching Alex climb for 20 minutes is far more inspiring than reading 300 pages about each pitch. Just search Alex on YouTube and you will find far more than this book can offer. Anyone with even a minor familiarity with climbing with grow impatient with the constant explanations of the sport's jargon and the photos in the center of the book are poorly curated, poorly captioned and don't particularly help facilitate getting to know Alex or project the beauty of his climbing.

A Treat to the Adventurous Souls!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

An invigorating & inspiring read!

Alone on the Wall is a phenomenal book from a phenomenal adventurer. I first learned of Alex Honnold's feats of climbing through the short film by the same name as this book. This book provides a deeper look into the journey that brought him to the public spotlight and the epic feats of adventuring he has completed since.

It's incredibly inspiring to read in detail these accounts of Alex's ascents, link-ups, and expeditions. I was pumped every day that I was reading the book & got in lots of hiking and gym climbing.

The book worked well with two authors. The narration alternates between italicized sections where Alex accounts his climbs first hand and the general text written by David Roberts that provides a third party perspective to the full spectrum of Alex's story. David also tied in key snippets of information about Alex from his climbing films, historical context for the climbing accomplishments, and enough technical explanation to allow even non-climbers to enjoy the narrative.

KINDLE READERS: Locations 3170-3252 are stunning photos! I was so gripped by the story I did not even notice the photos until reaching the end of the text, at which point I flipped slowly through them with mouth slightly agape.

FINAL TAKE: Highly recommended to all who want inspiration to elevate their dreams and continue pushing their personal adventures.
