Entertaining and interesting

Numbers are everyday objects and at the same time a cultural achievement of extraordinary importance. And this is a delightful book about numbers! It describes so many different aspects, like the cultural history of counting and number notation, the psychology of the number sense, and the philosophy of math and numbers, and combines it with mathematical entertainment. This broad range is what sets it apart from other books about numbers. So everybody should find something interesting here.

The book certainly assumes some general knowledge of elementary mathematics from high school. But it is really not difficult. For the most part, it is actually quite easy to read and provides rather surprising answers (e.g., why is it so difficult to learn to count? What is the connection between combinatorial counting and poetry? How to construct magic squares? Is the golden ratio hidden in Egyptian pyramids?)
I would recommend the book for everyone who seeks a more comprehensive understanding of numbers and their origin, their cultural, psychological and philosophical background, and feels attracted to beautiful number relationships like: 11x11=121, 111x111=12321, 1111x1111=1234321... (do you see the pattern?) Give it some time to sink in and it will be a very rewarding and entertaining experience. I really enjoyed it.

Great book for beginners and intermediate PL/SQL

Ben Forta's writing style is easy to digest and let's you learn PL/SQL quickly. Ben breaks down PL/SQL concepts better than what you can find online. I like his writing style so much that i bought the Regular Expressions book too. Get this book if you are a PeopleSoft user who is new to PL/SQL reporting. There is still plenty to learn if you are already using PL/SQL today. You won't regret buying this book.

About the Author

Dr. Jim McClave is currently President and CEO of Info Tech, Inc., a statistical consulting and software development firm with an international clientele. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor of Statistics at the University of Florida, where he was a full-time member of the faculty for twenty years.

Dr. Terry Sincich obtained his PhD in Statistics from the University of Florida in 1980. He is an Associate Professor in the Information Systems & Decision Sciences Department at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Sincich is responsible for teaching basic statistics to all undergraduates, as well as advanced statistics to all doctoral candidates, in the College of Business Administration. He has published articles in such journals as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, International Journal of Forecasting, Academy of Management Journal, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory. Dr. Sincich is a co-author of the texts Statistics, Statistics for Business & Economics, Statistics for Engineering & the Sciences, and A Second Course in Statistics: Regression Analysis.

A very decent Stat book

I have taught Stats on several occasions to undergrad students. Having reviewed numerous stat books and having tried teaching a few, I would say that there are two options if you want to learn business stats: 1) This book - which starts from the very beginning and takes you to a moderate level, and 2) the stat book by Sweeney. The Sweeney book is admittedly MORE detailed (and provides and covers more sections and topics INCLUDING Bayesian stats not coverred here). So if you are serious about stats and want to learn as much as possible get the Sweeney book. Else this one would do. BOTH are great books, well-written and user-friendly.

Malcolm Walker was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1946. With fellow Woolworth’s trainee manager Peter Hinchcliffe, Walker opened a small frozen food shop called Iceland in the Shropshire town of Oswestry in 1970. Iceland became a public company 14 years later, through one of Britain’s most successful stock exchange flotations of all time, and by 1999 it had grown into a �2 billion turnover business with 760 stores.

In August 2000, Iceland merged with the Booker cash and carry business and Walker announced that he would step down as CEO in March 2001. In preparation for his retirement, he sold half his shares in the company and left for the holiday of a lifetime in the Maldives. However, while he was away the new management of the company slashed profit expectations, plunging Iceland into a �26m loss rather than the �130m profit the City had been expecting. Walker was fired and spent three years under investigation by the authorities before being cleared of any wrongdoing.

In Walker’s absence, Iceland’s sales collapsed as customers deserted the company – and, almost exactly four years after he had left the business, he returned as its boss. His amazing revival of Iceland has seen like-for-like sales grow by more than 50% and the business winning the accolade of Best Big Company To Work For In the UK. In March 2012 Walker led a �1.5bn management buyout of the company and is now personally worth over �200m.

The incredible story of Walker’s life – which he tells here for the first time – is as dramatic as any you will find in business, and it serves as a model for how, through hard work and intelligent risk-taking, it is possible from a relatively modest upbringing to build a national enterprise and a household name known to millions.

Malcolm Walker co-founded Iceland in 1970 and was its Chairman and Chief Executive through 30 years of continuous sales growth. He left Iceland under a cloud early in 2001, but returned four years later to lead a transformation in its performance. Iceland today has sales of GBP2.6 billion, 800 stores and 25,000 employees, and is recognised as one of the Best Companies to Work For in the UK.

'... Lancaster was the former manager of the UK's Green Chemistry Network, and his book, Green chemistry: an introductory text, is a genuine introduction to the subject for undergraduate and postgraduate students, based as it is on clean chemical technology modules taught at the University of York. Much of the book should be understood by a general readership.

Starting from the 12 principles of green chemistry expounded by Paul Anastas in 1998, Lancaster, in a series of well written chapters, discusses such topics as waste minimisation, catalysis, solvents, environmental performance, renewable resources and alternative energy sources.

Lancaster's book is not just about green chemistry in the laboratory, but has several chapters on the industrial scene - developing greener technologies and processes as illustrated in a series of industrial case studies.'

About the Author
Mike Lancaster has more than 20 years experience in the chemical industry, mainly with BP in a variety of R&D and Business Management roles. He established the Green Chemistry Network and a Masters course in Clean Technology at the University of York. He has spent the last 6 years with the Chemical Industries Association and has been heavily involved in developing and promoting the sustainable development agenda.

This is a great book, easy to read and understand. Contains important concepts about going green. It helps you understand different chemical processes on how new products can be made and how industries can perform alternative routes to end at the same product.
